Cheyney (PA) vs Coppin State prediction: Coppin State opens Larry Stewart's third season chasing cleaner possessions

Against a Cheyney program with no Division I data, the Eagles' real opponent on Nov. 9 is last season's turnover problem.

Quick take
  • Coppin State is the only side with Division I numbers, and it is 3-0 against Cheyney all time, including an 88-62 win in January 2025.
  • Watch Coppin's ball security. Its turnover rate ranked 361st nationally last season, the clearest weakness a lesser opponent could exploit.
  • No spread or total has been posted yet. Last season Coppin's adjusted net efficiency of -29.9 ranked 363rd of 365.

A rebuild with half a roster back

Coppin State went 7-24 last season, and the Eagles open a new year with that weight still on them. Larry Stewart begins his third season with players who logged 51.9% of last season's minutes. That leaves a familiar core with plenty of new faces. The program also sat out the 2026 MEAC and NCAA tournaments over Academic Progress Rate penalties. No update on that status for this season has surfaced.

The losses are real. Khali Horton has moved on to Morgan State. One preseason ranking slots Coppin 362nd nationally and seventh in the MEAC.

The turnover problem

Last season Coppin gave the ball away on 22.3% of its possessions, a turnover rate that ranked 361st of 365. Cheyney's style is unknown, but any opponent that pressures will find that weakness. The Eagles did get to the line often: their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 37.8% ranked 97th. They wasted some of that edge by making only 67.4% of their free throws.

A home date against a non-Division I team is the cleanest place to start fixing those habits.

History and the setup

The series has been one-sided. Coppin leads 3-0 dating to a first meeting in November 2011, and the last game ended 88-62. The Monday tip is set for 11 a.m. at the Physical Education Complex, and no line has been posted yet. Nothing is known about Cheyney's roster, so the only question is how cleanly Coppin plays, not who wins.

Key players

  • Hussain Williams (Coppin State): He averaged 7.3 points last season but shot 26.3% from three on 137 attempts.
  • Jamari Piercy (Coppin State): His 23.5% usage rate led the returners last season, though he made only 47.4% of his free throws.
  • Tyler Koenig (Coppin State): He started 21 games last season and posted a 103.4 offensive rating, the best among the returners.
  • Tafara Gapare (Coppin State): He played 9 games at Villanova last season, averaging 16.3 minutes.
