Miami Heat vs Los Angeles Clippers prediction: Giannis and the Heat take aim at the Clippers' open paint

A short-handed Clippers team that can't protect the rim or the ball gets Giannis Antetokounmpo and one of the league's fastest offenses, with only its 3-point shooting to fight back.

Total (over/under)233.5

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 4, 7:06 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Miami should push the pace and attack the rim; LA needs hot 3-point shooting and cleaner possessions to stay close to a porous Heat defense.
  • Antetokounmpo, probable with a wrist sprain, against a Clippers defense allowing 55.1 paint points per game, 29th in the league.
  • Heat by 5, total 233.5, with both numbers unchanged since the first line recorded. Miami's defense ranks 26th in efficiency, which helps explain the high total.

Giannis and the open lane

Two teams off to bad starts, with one clear mismatch between them. Miami is 2-5 and the Clippers are 1-6 on a six-game losing streak. The Heat have the player most likely to exploit the Clippers' biggest weakness.

That player is Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averaged 27.6 points on 62.4% shooting for Milwaukee last season. In Monday's loss at the Lakers he had 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in 34 minutes. He then showed up on the injury report with a sprained right wrist. He is listed as probable for Wednesday.

Miami's offense already runs through the paint. The Heat score 52.0 points per game there, 4th in the league. The Clippers allow 55.1, 29th, and opponents are making 57.9% of their twos against them, 27th. LA's block rate, the share of opponent two-point tries it swats, is 7.9%, 26th. Yanic Konan Niederhauser is out after foot surgery. That leaves rim protection to Isaiah Jackson, who started at center Nov. 1, and Brook Lopez off the bench.

A roster still finding itself

These Clippers barely resemble last season's team. Players on the current roster accounted for only 48.7% of last season's minutes. Kawhi Leonard is in Toronto, James Harden is in Cleveland and Ivica Zubac is in Indiana.

The replacements are not all here yet. Brandon Ingram, acquired from Toronto, has not debuted and is not expected back before Nov. 8. Bradley Beal (knee) and Jordan Miller (shoulder) are also out. Derrick Jones Jr. (knee) and Rui Hachimura (quad) have been listed as out for this game in one report, but that has not been confirmed elsewhere. Their status is unsettled.

The result is an offense scoring 105.8 points per 100 possessions, 23rd. The bigger problem is ball security. LA turns it over on 19.7% of its possessions, 29th of 30. Miami plays at the league's 3rd-fastest pace and scores 17.3 fast-break points per game, 7th. Every live-ball giveaway feeds the part of the game the Heat want most.

Where the Clippers can punch back

Miami's defense has been the worst part of its start. The Heat allow 117.0 points per 100 possessions, 26th. Opponents shoot 41.0% from three against them, 29th, and their effective field goal percentage allowed (threes count 1.5 times) is 58.3%, also 29th.

That suits the one thing the Clippers do well. LA makes 38.4% of its threes, 5th in the league. The Clippers also rank 4th in steal rate. Miami protects the ball well, though, ranking 8th in turnover rate.

The warning sign is late-game fade. On Monday the Clippers led Toronto 63-52 at halftime and lost 118-125 after a fourth-quarter collapse. It was their second game in two nights. They had a rest day before this one.

What the market is saying

Miami is a 5-point road favorite, and the total sits at 233.5. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the line Wednesday morning. The Heat are -200 on the moneyline.

The favorite's tag hasn't been kind to Miami. The Heat are 2-5 against the spread and failed to cover as favorites at Charlotte and against Dallas. The Clippers are 3-4 ATS. Both teams have gone over in four of seven games.

The total reflects Miami's tempo on both ends. The Heat score 61.6 first-half points per game, 4th, and allow 64.1, 28th. Miami won both meetings last season, 120-119 in Los Angeles and 140-123 at home, but both rosters have changed a lot since then.
