Atlanta Hawks vs Washington Wizards prediction: Anthony Davis and the Wizards go hunting in Atlanta's soft middle

Atlanta guards the arc as well as anyone, but its interior is wide open, Jock Landale is out and Washington's offense lives in the paint.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 4, 7:06 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a grinding, paint-heavy game: Washington pounds the interior, while Atlanta tries to speed things up and steal possessions with its hands.
  • Washington's bigs against an Atlanta frontcourt missing Landale, on a defense that allows 59.6% on twos, 28th in the league.
  • Atlanta -2 (up from -1.5); total down to 232.5 from 234.5. Washington's games have stayed under the total in six of seven.

Where Washington will attack

The Hawks have built one of the league's stingiest perimeter defenses and left the middle open. Opponents shoot 30.9% from three against them, 3rd-best in the NBA, but 59.6% inside the arc, 28th of 30. Atlanta gives up 53.8 points in the paint per game (27th) and blocks shots at the 28th-ranked rate.

That is exactly where Washington wants to play. The Wizards score 51.1 paint points a night (5th) and make 57.7% of their twos (6th), while taking fewer threes than all but two teams. Anthony Davis, who averaged 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds in 20 games for Dallas last season, and Deandre Ayton, who shot 67.1% for the Lakers, give them two ways to punish that soft interior.

Atlanta's frontcourt is thin for this one. Jock Landale is out with a left hip strain, which leaves more of the load on Onyeka Okongwu. Washington has its own question: Alex Sarr missed Monday's win at Orlando and is questionable with left knee soreness.

Atlanta's hands, Washington's glass

Atlanta's best counter is to keep Washington from getting a shot up at all. The Hawks force turnovers on 18.3% of opponent possessions, 3rd in the league, and Dyson Daniels is averaging 3.0 steals a game. Washington protects the ball reasonably well, ranking 9th in turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions).

The boards tilt Atlanta's way too. The Wizards rank dead last in offensive rebound rate (the share of their own misses they grab back) and 26th on the defensive glass. If Atlanta turns steals and second chances into extra shots, it can offset what it gives up inside. The Hawks also lead the league in assist rate, and that ball movement plays well in transition after turnovers.

A defense nobody saw coming

Washington went 17-65 last season with the league's worst defense, allowing 119.6 points per 100 possessions. This season the Wizards rank 9th at 106.2, and opponents' effective field goal percentage (which counts threes 1.5 times) is 48.7%, 2nd-best in the NBA. Teams are making just 28.6% of their threes against them, the league's best mark. Opponent three-point shooting this early tends to swing on luck, so that number may not hold.

Washington also sends opponents to the line less than any other team, and Atlanta draws free throws at the 29th-ranked rate. That leaves the Hawks needing shotmaking. Nickeil Alexander-Walker leads them at 21.1 points on 40.3% from three. CJ McCollum, who averaged 18.7 points for Washington last season, returns to face his old team. This game also counts as NBA Cup group play.

Johnson's ankle and the total

Jalen Johnson missed Monday's win at Indiana with a left ankle sprain and was listed as questionable on the Nov. 3 report, with no update since. He averages 18.3 points and 8.0 assists, so his absence strips Atlanta of its main playmaker. Luguentz Dort started in his place Monday and scored 14 points in 31 minutes.

Atlanta's recent form is shaky. The Hawks lost 121-99 at New Orleans, then beat a six-man Indiana roster by only four as 10.5-point favorites. They are 3-5 against the spread. Washington has covered two straight as an underdog, including Monday's 103-94 win at Orlando, where rookie AJ Dybantsa scored a career-high 21.

The tempo clash shapes the total. Atlanta plays at the 5th-fastest pace, while Washington ranks 23rd. The market has leaned toward the slower game: the total has dropped from 234.5 to 232.5, and the spread has nudged toward Atlanta.
