Toronto Raptors vs Denver Nuggets prediction: Raptors' second chances test Denver's thin defensive glass

Without Kawhi Leonard, Toronto wins by stealing extra possessions, and Denver's defensive rebounding ranks near the bottom of the league.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 4, 7:06 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Toronto pushes pace and crashes the glass; Denver needs Jokic and Murray shot-making to outrun a stream of extra Raptors possessions.
  • Jakob Poeltl, questionable with shoulder bursitis, against Nikola Jokic. Without Poeltl, Toronto's frontcourt thins out against the league's best passing center.
  • Denver -4.5 after first showing -5.5 in our feed; the Nuggets are 2-4 against the spread this season.

Denver keeps giving the ball back

The Nuggets have not looked like themselves on defense, and the problem shows up after the shot. Denver grabs 68.1% of opponents' misses, 29th of 30 teams. Portland outrebounded them 53-37 on Monday in a 118-110 loss at Ball Arena, and Denver is 1-2 at home.

Toronto is built to exploit that. The Raptors rebound 32.5% of their own misses, 2nd in the league. They also force turnovers on 19.8% of opponent possessions, 1st in the NBA. Denver gives the ball away on 15.7% of its trips, 18th, which is middling for a team that was among the league's most careful last season.

Together those numbers describe the game Toronto wants: more shots than Denver, many of them in transition or off putbacks. The Raptors average 19.7 fast-break points, 2nd in the league, and play at the 4th-fastest pace. Denver sits 24th in pace. If Toronto sets the tempo, the Nuggets' half-court quality has to make up for a lot of lost possessions.

Toronto without its newest star

Kawhi Leonard won't play. He has finished treatment for swelling in his left knee and is due to be re-evaluated in a week. Toronto acquired him from the Clippers in September, sending Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick the other way. Leonard averaged 27.9 points for the Clippers last season, so his absence removes the Raptors' most reliable half-court scorer.

The bigger question for tonight is Jakob Poeltl. He has missed two games with left shoulder bursitis and was upgraded from doubtful to questionable Tuesday, with shootaround the next checkpoint. He is the Raptors' natural answer to Nikola Jokic. Without him, minutes likely go to Collin Murray-Boyles and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Nate Bittle is also out with a foot fracture.

That leaves the offense to Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. Toronto won Monday at the Clippers 125-118 after erasing a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, so this group has shown it can score without Leonard.

Rim pressure versus a shaky perimeter

Toronto cannot shoot from deep right now. The Raptors make 31.5% of their threes, 27th in the league, and their effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) ranks 23rd. They compensate by attacking the paint, where they score 52.3 points a game, 3rd in the NBA.

Denver has not protected the paint. The Nuggets allow 51.7 paint points a game, 24th, and rank 25th in block rate. Their defensive efficiency, points allowed per 100 possessions, is 114.5, 25th of 30.

The Nuggets' edge is the whistle. Toronto's opponents shoot free throws at a rate of 39.6 attempts per 100 field goal tries, the worst mark in the league. Denver gets to the line at the 6th-highest rate and makes 80.2% of its free throws. That is a quiet way for the Nuggets to make up for the rebounding gap.

Denver also shoots better from deep, hitting 37.0% of its threes, 8th. Jokic said this week his practice shooting isn't translating into games, though, and Spencer Jones (hamstring) is out, as is Julian Strawther with a knee sprain. Cameron Johnson is probable after a late scare Monday, listed for lower-body injury management.

The market leans Toronto

Denver is a 4.5-point favorite, down from 5.5 when our feed first saw the game, so the move has gone toward Toronto. The total sits at 230.5, a point below where it was first recorded.

The ATS records explain some of the drift. Denver is 2-4 against the spread and has failed to cover in all three home games. Toronto is 4-3 against the spread, and four of its last five games went over the total.

The Nuggets won both meetings last season, 106-103 in Toronto and 121-115 in Denver. Both rosters have changed since then. This is the first meeting of the season and Toronto's only trip to Denver.
