Minnesota Timberwolves vs Houston Rockets prediction: Without Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball steers Wolves into Houston's buzzsaw
The league's best net-rating team hosts a Minnesota side that has kept winning without its star. The market has moved toward the Wolves.
| Spread | Houston Rockets -8 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 220.5 |
- Houston's elite shooting and first-half defense should build a lead; Minnesota needs its top-three defense and Ball's creation to keep it within reach.
- Watch Alperen Sengun against a Wolves defense that ranks 21st in paint points allowed, with Steven Adams out and Clint Capela questionable.
- Houston was first seen at -9.5 in our feed and now sits -8, with the total down to 220.5; both teams are 7-1 against the spread.
The Wolves after Edwards
Anthony Edwards scored 47 in Cleveland on Oct. 26. He is now out after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, with an estimated return of Dec. 21. Minnesota has gone 2-1 since the procedure, and the identity holding it together is defense. The Wolves rank 3rd of 30 in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) at 102.7.
The offense now runs through LaMelo Ball, acquired in an offseason four-team trade. He played through a right wrist bruise Monday and dropped 34 on Milwaukee in a 112-100 win. No Wednesday status for the wrist has surfaced. Ball averages 5.9 assists, but this roster rarely passes the ball through to the finish: Minnesota ranks 25th in assist rate. Jaden McDaniels and Ayo Dosunmu have carried more of the scoring, and Dosunmu is hitting 41.9% from three.
Depth is the worry. Terrence Shannon Jr. (left hip bruise) missed Monday and was listed as questionable and day-to-day as of Nov. 4. If he sits, Cody Williams, Trey Lyles and Jaylen Clark could absorb his minutes.
Houston's soft spot is inside
The Rockets are 7-1 and first in the West. Their net efficiency of 12.8 per 100 possessions ranks 1st. Their weakness sits near the basket: opponents shoot 56.5% on twos against them, 24th in the league.
That matters more this week. Steven Adams (right calf strain) is out, and Clint Capela (right ankle sprain) is questionable after missing the Boston game. Ime Udoka could lean on smaller groups built around Jabari Smith Jr. Minnesota scores 50.0 paint points per game, 8th, and grabs 31.1% of its own misses, 5th. Rudy Gobert's 12.0 rebounds a night are the most direct pressure point.
The Wolves give up just as much inside. Their opponents also score 50.0 in the paint, 21st, which leaves Alperen Sengun room to work. He averages 23.3 points and 7.8 assists, the hub of an offense ranked 2nd in efficiency.
Two defenses that kill the three
Both teams guard the arc. Houston holds opponents to 30.0% from three, 2nd in the NBA, and Minnesota allows 31.1%, 5th. The Wolves shoot 37.5% themselves, so the hottest shooter on the floor may decide the margin.
That could be Smith. He has hit 48.1% from deep and leads an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 57.4% that ranks 2nd. Houston also opens fast and suffocates early: its 48.9 first-half points allowed are the fewest in the league.
Minnesota cannot afford empty trips at the line. It shoots 64.5% on free throws, dead last, and Gobert is at 43.9%. Houston makes 81.6%, 5th. A late intentional-foul sequence would hurt the visitors.
Pace, history and the number
Houston plays slow, 28th in pace, while Minnesota sits 9th. The Rockets have gone under in their last two home wins, over Oklahoma City and Boston. The total fell from 223.5 to 220.5.
The spread drifted from Houston -9.5 to -8, toward Minnesota. The Wolves won the last two meetings last season, including a 136-132 shootout in Houston on April 10. Both clubs had Monday's game as their last outing, and neither is on a back-to-back.
