Dallas Mavericks vs San Antonio Spurs prediction: Cooper Flagg gets his first shot at San Antonio's paint wall
Dallas wins by finishing inside, and the Spurs have been the hardest team in the league to score on at the rim, with the Mavericks short of shooters.
| Spread | San Antonio Spurs -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 227.5 |
- San Antonio clogs the lane, Dallas has to win from deep without its best shooter, and Mavericks turnovers feed the league's top fast-break attack.
- Flagg and the Dallas forwards attacking the rim against a Spurs defense allowing a league-best 47.8% on twos.
- Spurs are 11.5-point favorites, a point shorter than first seen; Dallas covered three straight as an underdog before Monday's loss.
The paint decides it
Dallas has built its 4-3 start on finishing inside. The Mavericks make 59.6% of their twos, 2nd in the league. That is the engine behind an effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) of 55.5%, 5th.
San Antonio is the worst possible opponent for that plan. Opponents hit 47.8% of their twos against the Spurs, the best mark in the league. San Antonio also blocks 12.0% of opponent two-point tries, 5th. Victor Wembanyama is not on Wednesday's injury report.
This is Flagg's first look at that defense this season. He missed the Oct. 24 meeting with a left shoulder sprain. Last season he averaged 21.0 points but shot 29.5% from three, which gives defenders license to sag into the lane against him.
If the rim closes, Dallas has to shoot over the top, and that has been shaky. The Mavericks hit 33.2% of their threes, 21st, and went 7 of 33 from deep in Monday's loss to Sacramento. The opening is there: the Spurs allow 37.0% from three, 22nd.
Dallas arrives short-handed again
Kyrie Irving came off the injury report Tuesday after sitting out Monday's loss for left-knee injury management. He tore the ACL in that knee in March 2025 and missed all of last season. Dusty May confirmed in late October that Irving is on a minutes restriction, so expect a managed workload.
The bigger loss is Max Christie, who is out with a hip injury. He shot 40.4% from three for Dallas last season, and the Mavericks badly need that against a defense that walls off the paint. Caleb Martin is available and could stay in the starting five.
Dereck Lively II (foot), Tarik Biberovic (heel) and Sergio de Larrea (knee) are out. Santi Aldama is questionable with a knee issue as of Wednesday morning. He averaged 14.0 points for Memphis last season. Dallas returns only 56.1% of last season's minutes, so its numbers from that season say little about this group.
San Antonio has fewer holes. Tobias Harris, signed to start at power forward, has not played this season and is out with a calf strain. Jayden Quaintance remains out after knee surgery. Otherwise the Spurs return 93.9% of the minutes from a 62-20 team.
Giveaways fuel the Spurs' sprint
Dallas gives the ball away on 16.6% of its possessions, 25th in the league. San Antonio's turnover rate of 12.9% ranks 2nd. The Spurs don't force many miscues themselves, ranking 18th in forced turnover rate. Their danger is what they do with the ones they get.
San Antonio scores 20.9 fast-break points per game, the most in the league. Every live-ball Dallas turnover becomes a layup line, and that compounds the problem of scoring against a set half-court defense. The Spurs also start fast, scoring 60.1 first-half points per game, 5th.
The market inches toward Dallas
The Spurs opened in our feed at -12.5 and now sit at -11.5, and the total has slipped from 229.5 to 227.5. Both teams have gone under in five of seven games this season.
Dallas covered three straight as an underdog, against Miami, Oklahoma City and Houston, before failing as a favorite against Sacramento. The Spurs have won five straight but are 3-4 against the spread.
The rivalry has been one-way. San Antonio has won six straight over Dallas, including a 122-106 win on Oct. 24 as a 14.5-point favorite. Last April's meeting in San Antonio ended 139-120.
What to watch
- Dallas's two-point volume. If the Mavericks keep finishing inside against the league's stingiest interior defense, the spread is in play.
- Irving's minutes. A managed workload puts more creation on Flagg and a thin backcourt.
- Aldama's status. His availability as a stretch big matters with Christie out.
- Spurs fast breaks. Dallas turnovers turning into easy points is the quickest route to a blowout.
