Los Angeles Lakers vs Sacramento Kings prediction: Luka Doncic's scoring binge hits a Kings defense missing its center
The Lakers bring the league's most efficient offense to Sacramento, where a Kings team without Maxime Raynaud or Keegan Murray has the worst interior defense in the NBA.
| Spread | Los Angeles Lakers -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 234.5 |
- The Lakers should live in the paint and at the line against a Kings defense ranked last in opponent 2-point percentage and short two starters.
- Luka Doncic, averaging 38.3 points, against a Kings backcourt of rookie Darius Acuff Jr. and Zach LaVine, who is managing a sore elbow.
- Lakers -11.5 with the total down from 238.5 to 234.5; Sacramento allows 124.3 points per game, 29th in the league.
No resistance at the rim
The Lakers are 6-2 and scoring like nobody else. Their offensive efficiency of 118.9 points per 100 possessions ranks 1st of 30, and their effective field goal percentage (which counts threes 1.5 times) of 61.1% also leads the league. Sacramento is 1-6, has lost both home games, and owns the defense least equipped to slow any of it.
The Kings allow opponents to shoot 60.9% on 2-pointers, worst in the NBA, and give up 56.6 paint points a game, also 30th. Their block rate is last in the league too. That is a soft middle for Luka Doncic to probe, and he has been relentless: 38.3 points, 8.1 assists and 8.0 rebounds a game. Walker Kessler finishes what Doncic creates, shooting 71.4% from the field, and is expected to play through a splinted left finger.
The outside shooting adds a second layer. Austin Reaves is hitting 44.4% of his threes, and the Lakers rank 2nd in 3-point percentage as a team.
A depleted Kings front line
Sacramento's interior problems got worse before this game. Raynaud, who started 56 games at center last season, is out with a dislocated right knee; he was set to be re-evaluated in about two weeks as of Oct. 26. Keegan Murray (ankle) is also out, with a 10-to-14-day re-evaluation dating from the same report, and Ben Simmons is gone for the season after Achilles surgery. One report also lists Dylan Cardwell out with a calf injury, though the other injury lists don't include him.
Precious Achiuwa is probable with left ankle soreness, and LaVine is expected to start despite right elbow soreness. Only 57.4% of last season's minutes return from a team that went 22-60, so last year's numbers say little about this group.
The new face of the offense is Acuff, the seventh overall pick, who leads the team in scoring. He had 25 points in Monday's 115-100 win at Dallas, the Kings' first of the season, alongside 24 from Malik Monk and 23 from LaVine. Sacramento hit 19 threes that night, and it will likely need another shooting night like that to keep pace.
Where Sacramento can steal possessions
The Lakers do have soft spots. Their turnover rate of 17.8 per 100 possessions ranks 27th, and they grab only 68.8% of available defensive rebounds, 28th. Those are the openings an underdog needs.
The trouble is that Sacramento isn't built to exploit either one. The Kings rank 20th in forcing turnovers and 26th in offensive rebound rate, and the frontcourt injuries won't help on the glass.
The foul line tilts the other way. The Lakers rank 2nd in free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) at 35.7%, and the Kings' opponent free throw rate ranks 25th. With Doncic attacking a thin, undersized rotation, Sacramento's foul count is worth watching early.
The number and the schedule
The Lakers are 11.5-point favorites, a line that has held since our feed first saw it, with a -550 moneyline. The total has fallen from 238.5 to 234.5.
The first half could set the tone. The Lakers lead the league with 66.4 first-half points per game, and the Kings allow 64.1, 28th. Sacramento's overs are 5-2, and the Kings are 2-5 against the spread, covering only at Dallas. The Lakers are 5-3 ATS.
One counterweight: the Lakers are coming off a 138-117 win over Miami on Monday and have had two days of rest. They took three of four meetings last season, but the Kings won the Jan. 12 game in Sacramento, 124-112. The Lakers are without only Adou Thiero, who has yet to debut and is out with knee inflammation.
