Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns prediction: Blazers' three-point volume tests Phoenix's worst perimeter defense in the league

Portland took half its shots from deep while building a 5-1 start, and Phoenix has yet to show it can guard the arc.

Quick take
  • Portland's shooting volume should find room against a Phoenix defense ranked 30th, and the Suns need Booker and the home floor to keep it close.
  • Portland's 50.3% three-point attempt rate, 2nd in the league, against a Suns defense allowing 41.1% from deep, worst of 30.
  • Portland is a 3-point favorite, down from 3.5 on Tuesday. Phoenix is 0-5 against the spread this season.

Phoenix can't guard the arc

Two weeks ago Portland hung 124 points on Phoenix and led 72-39 at halftime. The rematch moves to the desert, where the Suns open a seven-game homestand at 1-4. The Blazers arrive at 5-1 without Ja Morant or Shaedon Sharpe. The question is whether anything about Phoenix's perimeter defense has changed since opening night.

Portland lets it fly. Half of its field goal attempts come from beyond the arc, a 50.3% three-point attempt rate that ranks 2nd in the league. Phoenix has been the worst team in the NBA at stopping that shot. Opponents are hitting 41.1% of their threes, 30th of 30, and the Suns allow the 8th-highest share of attempts from deep.

That explains most of a defensive efficiency of 120.9 points allowed per 100 possessions, last in the league. It is a sharp turn from last season, when Phoenix ranked 9th in defensive efficiency. Most of that group is still here: 74.7% of last season's minutes return. Nothing in five games suggests the problem is going away.

Extra possessions for Portland

The second chance may matter as much as the first. Phoenix grabs only 66.0% of opponents' misses, the worst defensive rebound rate in the league. Portland rebounds 30.5% of its own misses, 6th, with Donovan Clingan anchoring the glass. Long threes produce long rebounds, and the Suns have not been finishing possessions.

The free throw line tilts Portland's way too. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 33.6% ranks 4th. Phoenix sends opponents to the line more than all but a few teams, ranking 27th in opponent free throw rate. The catch is that Portland converts poorly once it gets there. It ranks 27th in free throw percentage, which can keep a lopsided whistle from turning into a lopsided score.

Portland's rearranged backcourt

Morant, acquired from Memphis, is out with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and was expected to miss about four weeks from Oct. 30. Sharpe is out after knee surgery for a torn meniscus. Scoot Henderson stepped into Morant's starting spot, and Jrue Holiday has thrived as a sixth man. Damian Lillard is back this season after missing all of last season with an Achilles tear.

The formula held up Monday in Denver. Deni Avdija scored 28, and Holiday added 17 points and 10 assists off the bench in a win as an underdog. Robert Williams III appears set for a second straight game after a knee-management absence, though Portland hasn't formally confirmed it. The Blazers are 4-0 on the road.

Phoenix's thin frontcourt

The Suns are short inside. Mark Williams is out after surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder, likely until February. Rasheer Fleming (left ankle sprain) and Jordan Goodwin (calf) are both questionable as of Wednesday. Goodwin left Monday's game at Golden State in the second quarter.

That loss captures the Suns' season. Phoenix led by as many as 17 before a 12-0 Warriors run, then lost 116-113. The offense can score. Devin Booker averaged 26.1 points last season, and Miles Bridges averaged 17.1 for Charlotte before his trade to Phoenix. Collin Gillespie shot 40.1% from three last season, giving Phoenix a shooter who can trade baskets with Portland. The bigger problem is defense early in games: the Suns allow 63.0 first-half points, 27th in the league.

Where the line sits

Portland is a 3-point favorite, down from 3.5 when the line first appeared Tuesday, a small move toward Phoenix. The total sits at 227.5. Phoenix has failed to cover in all five games this season, and four of those games went over. Portland is 4-2 against the spread and 2-4 on overs, with unders in each of its last three games.

The recent series has swung hard. Phoenix won the first two meetings last season, then Portland won 92-77 in Phoenix in February and beat the Suns again in the April play-in, 114-110, also in Phoenix.
