Los Angeles Lakers vs Golden State Warriors prediction: Luka Doncic returns to a Warriors defense that can't guard the paint
Golden State won two straight on the road, but the league's most efficient offense is coming to Chase Center with its star back and the Warriors' interior still wide open.
| Spread | Los Angeles Lakers -3.25 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 234 |
- The Lakers' efficient offense should find the rim again; Golden State's path is to win the offensive glass and the turnover battle.
- Doncic and the Lakers' downhill attack against a Warriors defense ranked 29th in opponent 2-point percentage.
- Lakers are 2.5-point favorites, up from 1.5 when our feed first saw the line; they won the opener 127-105.
The interior problem returns
Nine days ago the Lakers opened the season by beating Golden State 127-105. They led by 14 at halftime. Now the NBA Cup group stage brings the rematch to San Francisco, and the Warriors have to show their two-game road streak was more than a hot week.
The first problem is the same one they had in the opener. Los Angeles leads the league in offensive efficiency at 120.1 points per 100 possessions, and it does its best work inside: the Lakers make 64.1% of their 2-pointers, 1st of 30. Golden State allows opponents 61.4% on twos, 29th, and its block rate (blocks per opponent 2-point attempt) of 7.6% ranks 28th. The Warriors' defense sits 26th in efficiency overall.
That gap gets wider with Luka Doncic back. He sat Wednesday's back-to-back game against the Clippers with back tightness that the team called precautionary, and he is off the injury report for tonight. He averaged 33.5 points last season, and nobody on Golden State's depleted perimeter has a clear answer for him.
A depth test the Lakers passed
This is a very different Lakers roster. LeBron James is in Philadelphia now. Players still on the team account for just 39.9% of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers say little about this group.
The newcomers have filled the gaps. Without Doncic on Wednesday, Quentin Grimes started and scored 23, and Collin Sexton added 21 off the bench in a 103-87 win over the Clippers. Sexton shot 40.1% from three for Charlotte last season. Jarred Vanderbilt made his season debut in that game and played 21 minutes.
The Lakers still have some bodies missing. Cameron Carr (oblique) and Adou Thiero (knee) are out. Ziaire Williams is questionable with a sore foot and will be re-evaluated before tip. Walker Kessler is available while playing with a splint on his finger.
Where Golden State can swing it
The Warriors' best weapon is second chances. They grab 33.9% of their own misses, the best offensive rebound rate in the league, and the Lakers rank 27th in defensive rebounding. Expect Draymond Green and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg to crash the glass. Lendeborg is off the injury report after playing 35 minutes Wednesday, and he traded trash talk with Doncic in the opener.
Ball security cuts both ways. Both teams turn it over a lot: Los Angeles ranks 25th in turnover rate and Golden State 27th. The Lakers force turnovers on 18.9% of opponent possessions, 2nd in the league. That is the Lakers' path to transition points, and Golden State's careless possessions feed it directly.
Free throws could also tilt things. The Lakers lead the league in free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot) at 38.2%, but they also foul a lot: their opponent free throw rate ranks 29th. Golden State gets to the line well too, 4th in the league.
The Warriors' thin rotation
Golden State is missing three rotation pieces. Moses Moody (knee) and Jimmy Butler (ACL) are out long term. Kristaps Porzingis is away from the team indefinitely while dealing with ongoing health concerns, and the Warriors are exploring trades involving him.
Gui Santos (knee tendinitis) is listed as doubtful after missing Wednesday. If he sits, Brandin Podziemski and Brandon Williams carry more of the creation load. Podziemski averaged 13.8 points last season. Williams averaged 13.0 for Dallas. Stephen Curry and Green anchor the starting group, and Al Horford and Georges Niang are the likely options to soak up Santos's minutes.
What the market is saying
The Lakers are 2.5-point favorites, at -135 on the moneyline. When our feed first saw this game, the Warriors were getting only 1.5, so the line has moved toward Los Angeles. The total sits at 234.5, up from 233.5.
The Warriors have covered three straight as underdogs, including outright wins at Denver and Minnesota. The Lakers have scored the most first-half points in the league, 66.6 per game, and they won both of last season's meetings at Chase Center: 129-101 in February and 119-103 in April.
