Los Angeles Clippers vs Minnesota Timberwolves prediction: Edwards-less Wolves must protect the ball against the Clippers' hands
With stars sidelined on both benches, this NBA Cup game may turn on whether Minnesota's rebuilt backcourt survives a defense that lives on steals.
| Spread | Minnesota Timberwolves -7 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 223 |
- Expect a grinding, short-handed game: the Clippers chase turnovers and threes, while Minnesota leans on Rudy Gobert, the glass and its perimeter defense.
- LaMelo Ball against the Clippers' ball pressure. Ball turned it over six times Wednesday; the Clippers force turnovers at the 3rd-highest rate.
- Minnesota is a 7.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw it. The Clippers are 3-1 against the spread despite a 1-3 record.
Two benches full of stars
Friday's NBA Cup group game at Target Center is defined as much by who is missing as by who plays. Anthony Edwards, who averaged 28.8 points last season, had an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee Thursday and could miss up to two months. Donte DiVincenzo remains out after Achilles surgery. Minnesota's first game without Edwards went poorly: a 119-114 home loss to Golden State in which Ball shot 3 of 11 from the field.
The Clippers are thinner still. Brandon Ingram, who averaged 21.5 points for Toronto last season, is set to miss at least one more week. Bradley Beal, Max Strus, Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser are all out. Rui Hachimura's status is unsettled: he was listed day-to-day with quad soreness on Friday after one Thursday preview listed him out. If he sits, the Clippers lose a newcomer who shot 44.3% from three for the Lakers last season.
Turnovers decide the possessions
This is the sharpest contrast in the matchup. The Clippers cough it up on 22.9% of their possessions, dead last in the league, yet they force turnovers at an 18.5% rate, 3rd of 30. Both ends of their games are chaotic.
Minnesota sits in the middle on both counts, but the Wolves just lost their primary creator, and Ball's six turnovers Wednesday came with Edwards in street clothes. Kris Dunn, who averaged 1.6 steals last season, will likely spend the night hounding the ball. If Ball handles that pressure, Minnesota's offense should find enough. If he doesn't, the Clippers' steals become the transition points their half-court offense can't generate.
Gobert's paint and the glass
The Clippers wall off the arc and give up the lane. They allow 54.5 paint points per game, 28th in the league. Minnesota's interior should be the steadiest part of a short-handed offense.
The boards tilt the same way. Minnesota owns the league's best defensive rebound rate at 78.2%, the share of opponent misses it collects, while the Clippers rank 26th at 70.2%. Second chances for the Wolves could offset whatever the Clippers' steals take away.
The Clippers' answer is shooting. They hit 39.0% from three, 4th best, but Minnesota holds opponents to 28.9%, the best mark in the league. One Wolves weakness: they shoot 62.7% at the line, 30th of 30, which can keep a trailing opponent close late.
A Clippers team starting over
Last season's results say little about this group. Only 48.7% of the Clippers' minutes from last season belong to players still on the roster, with Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Ivica Zubac all gone. Leonard scored 45 in the Clippers' 153-128 win over Minnesota in March, a reminder of a team that no longer exists.
The current version scores 103.6 points per 100 possessions, 27th in the league, and shot its way to an 87-103 home loss to the Lakers on Wednesday after trailing 38-56 at the half.
Where the line sits
Minnesota is favored by 7.5, the same number our feed first recorded. The total ticked up from 222.5 to 223.5.
The Clippers have been better against the number than on the scoreboard, covering three of four, and three of their four games have gone under. Minnesota is 4-1 against the spread, though the one miss came in Wednesday's loss to Golden State.
