Houston Rockets vs Dallas Mavericks prediction: Unbeaten Rockets bring a battered frontcourt into Dallas

Houston buried the Mavericks by 18 on opening night, but with Alperen Sengun questionable and its backup bigs sidelined, the NBA Cup rematch hinges on who controls the paint.

Quick take
  • Houston's shooting and defense should control the game, but a thin frontcourt gives Dallas a real path inside.
  • Cooper Flagg against Houston's wing defenders, especially if Sengun sits and the Rockets play small.
  • Houston is favored by 6, up from 5.5 when our feed first saw the game; the Rockets are 5-0 against the spread.

Houston without its anchor

The Rockets are 5-0, have covered every game, and open NBA Cup group play the way they opened the season: against Dallas, a team they led 70-38 at halftime on Oct. 21 before winning 128-110. The difference now is who's standing in the middle.

Alperen Sengun is questionable with a mild lower back strain after missing Wednesday's game in Milwaukee. Ime Udoka said he hopes it costs him "a few games at most." Steven Adams is out with a calf strain, Reed Sheppard is out with a back injury, and Marcus Smart is questionable with a forearm strain. Fred VanVleet's return softens the guard losses.

Houston didn't miss Sengun on Wednesday, winning 132-100 at Milwaukee. Still, the Rockets' interior defense was already their soft spot: they allow 52.0 paint points per game, 24th of 30. Dallas makes 59.8% of its two-pointers, 3rd in the league. If Houston goes small, the Mavericks should attack the rim all night.

The three-point chasm

Houston's start rests on the arc at both ends. The Rockets make 40.4% of their threes, best in the league, and opponents hit just 29.1% against them, 2nd. That gap is why their effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) sits at 59.4, 2nd in the NBA.

Kevin Durant, who shot 41.3% from deep for Houston last season, is the engine of that efficiency. Dallas found its stroke Wednesday, making a season-best 16 threes in a 120-96 win over Oklahoma City. Doing that again against this defense is a much taller order.

Extra possessions favor Houston

The Rockets grab 31.0% of their own misses, 4th in the league, and Dallas ranks 21st on the defensive glass. Without Dereck Lively II, who is listed out with a foot injury (one listing has him day-to-day, so his status is unsettled), the Mavericks have fewer bodies to keep Houston off the boards.

The free throw line tilts the same way. Houston's free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot) ranks 5th; Dallas ranks last at 19.3. A team that rarely gets to the line needs to win the shooting battle outright, and that is exactly where Houston has been strongest.

Flagg and a rebuilt Dallas

Last season's 26-56 Mavericks are a poor guide. Only 56.1% of last season's minutes return, and Dusty May, a first-time NBA coach, now runs the bench. Cooper Flagg is the constant: he scored 32 in the opener against Houston and 26 with eight assists against the Thunder.

Depth is the worry. Naji Marshall (illness), Santi Aldama (knee) and Tarik Biberovic (heel) are game-time decisions, and Sergio de Larrea is out. Dallas has been an underdog in every game this season and is 3-2 against the spread, and it won both of last season's meetings in Dallas.

Where the market sits

Houston is favored by 6 after opening at 5.5 in our feed, and the total has dipped to 226 from 227.5. The two teams pull in opposite directions on totals: Houston's games have gone over in four of five, while Dallas has gone under four times in five.

Houston may also play Saturday against Oklahoma City, though the site of that game hasn't been confirmed.

  • Sengun's status at tipoff, and whether Houston starts small
  • Dallas's two-point volume against a defense that ranks 24th in paint points allowed
  • The offensive glass with Lively and Adams both out
