Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Carolina Panthers prediction: Baker Mayfield returns, but Tampa Bay's protection problem comes with him

The Buccaneers get their quarterback back for their first NFC South game, minus right tackle Luke Goedeke and top target Emeka Egbuka, against a Carolina offense that throws more yards than anyone.

Carolina Panthers win 60% of the simulated games, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40%. Median score: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Carolina Panthers 24. Watch the most typical game, play by play.

A simulation of the betting market's view, not a pick: the teams' strength is set so the simulated games average out to the consensus spread and total. Play calls, yardage, sacks, turnovers and the clock come from real NFL plays (2021-24) and this season's usage.

Quick take
  • Carolina's league-best passing attack should set the script; Tampa Bay needs Bucky Irving and its defense to shorten the game for a rusty Mayfield.
  • Tampa Bay's pass protection, 29th in sack rate allowed, without Goedeke against a Carolina rush missing Jaelan Phillips and Thomas Incoom.
  • Carolina -3 and a 44.5 total haven't budged all week. Tampa Bay is 1-4-1 against the spread this season.

Mayfield back, line still shaky

Tampa Bay's season has run through a quarterback room in triage. Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb, missed three games, and handed the offense to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels. Mayfield was a full participant in practice Wednesday through Friday, and Todd Bowles said Friday he looks ready and is expected to start. His official status remains questionable.

His return matters because Daniels never found traction. The rookie averaged 5.1 yards per attempt with five interceptions in four games, two of them in last week's overtime loss to Pittsburgh, which ended with Daniels sacked on fourth down. Tampa Bay ranks 29th in offensive EPA per play (expected points added: how much each snap moved a team toward points).

Mayfield alone won't fix the protection. The Bucs allow sacks on 9.1% of dropbacks, 29th in the league, and Mayfield himself went down 13 times in his three games. Now starting right tackle Luke Goedeke (calf) is out. He'll also be throwing without Emeka Egbuka (concussion), who leads the team with 49 targets. Chris Godwin Jr., Cade Otton and Ted Hurst III absorb those looks, with David Sills V just activated off injured reserve.

The relief valve is Carolina's thinned edge. The Panthers rank 21st in defensive sack rate, and both Jaelan Phillips (hamstring) and Thomas Incoom (calf) are out. Carolina plans to elevate Nick Hampton from the practice squad for depth.

Bryce Young keeps throwing

Carolina's offense is the best unit on the field. The Panthers lead the league at 309.8 passing yards per game and rank 6th in EPA per dropback. Young has 11 touchdowns against two interceptions. Tetairoa McMillan averages 94.2 receiving yards a game, and Jalen Coker, whose 32-yard catch-and-run off a third-down blitz set up the clinching drive in Philadelphia, adds 79.8.

The Panthers also play fast and throw early. They run the 2nd-most plays per game and rank 4th in early-down pass rate, and their 10.7% explosive-play rate (runs of 10+ yards, passes of 20+) sits 5th.

Tampa Bay's defense is the reason this isn't a blowout spread. It ranks 4th in EPA per play allowed and 7th against the pass by EPA per dropback. It will be without safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (ribs), the player most responsible for keeping deep shots in front of it, and linebacker Christian Rozeboom went to injured reserve.

Where the Bucs can punch back

The cleanest path for Tampa Bay runs through Bucky Irving. Carolina allows 132.2 rushing yards per game, 27th in the league, and Irving has 452 yards at 4.7 per carry. A steady run game protects a thin tackle group and a quarterback shaking off three weeks away.

The other side of that matchup favors the Bucs too. Tampa Bay allows 75.5 rushing yards per game, 2nd-fewest, which could push Carolina further toward the air and Chuba Hubbard toward a quieter day.

Finishing is the swing factor. Carolina allows touchdowns on 76.9% of opponent red-zone trips, 29th. Tampa Bay converts only 47.4% of its own, 28th. Whichever trend holds decides whether Bucs drives end in sevens or field goals.

A short number, a familiar foe

Carolina is a 3-point favorite with a 44.5 total, and neither number has moved since early in the week. The Panthers are 3-2 against the spread. Tampa Bay is 0-4 at home but 1-1 on the road, and its lone win came at Dallas as a 9.5-point underdog.

This series has stayed tight and low. Tampa Bay has won four of the last five meetings, including a 16-14 win in the most recent one on Jan. 3. Carolina enters 1-0 in the division. Kickoff is forecast for 64 degrees with 11 mph wind and no rain.

What to watch

  • How often Mayfield is hit early, with Goedeke out
  • Irving's carries against Carolina's 27th-ranked run defense
  • Young's deep shots against a secondary without Winfield

Key players

  • Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): In three games this season he averaged 6.4 yards per attempt but was sacked 13 times.
  • Bucky Irving (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): He has 452 rushing yards at 4.7 per carry this season, the Bucs' best weapon against a soft Carolina run defense.
  • Chris Godwin Jr. (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): With Egbuka out, his 23 catches for 216 yards this season make him the likely top target.
  • Jalon Daniels (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): The rookie threw five interceptions in four games this season and returns to the bench if Mayfield is cleared.
  • Bryce Young (Carolina Panthers): He has thrown for 1,549 yards and 11 touchdowns with two interceptions in five games this season.
  • Tetairoa McMillan (Carolina Panthers): He averages 94.2 receiving yards per game this season on 48 targets.
  • Jalen Coker (Carolina Panthers): He has 319 receiving yards in four games this season and made the key play in the win at Philadelphia.
  • Chuba Hubbard (Carolina Panthers): He averages 85.2 rushing yards per game this season but faces the league's 2nd-stingiest run defense.
