Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Commanders prediction: Tanner McKee and a gutted Eagles offense walk into Washington
Without Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith or Dontayvion Wicks, Philadelphia's league-worst offense by yards per play needs Washington's battered defensive front to crack.
| Spread | Washington Commanders -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 40.5 |
Washington Commanders win 69% of the simulated games, Philadelphia Eagles 31%. Median score: Philadelphia Eagles 17, Washington Commanders 23. Watch the most typical game, play by play.
- Washington, rested off a bye, should lean on its run game against the league's worst run defense by EPA while McKee scrapes for yards.
- Tanner McKee and a receiver room missing DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks against a Washington pass defense allowing 268.0 yards per game.
- Washington is -6.5, up from -4.5 when the line first appeared; Philadelphia is 1-6 against the spread this season.
McKee with no margin
Five straight losses, a franchise quarterback on injured reserve and two top receivers in street clothes. The Eagles arrive for Sunday night's NFC East game at Northwest Stadium with less offense than at any point this season. Washington, rested off its bye and favored by 6.5, gets a chance to steady a season that has started 1-4-1.
Jalen Hurts is out for the season with blood clots, which hands the offense to Tanner McKee. Across two games this season he has completed 61.3% of his passes at 5.3 yards per attempt. His first start, against Carolina, produced 222 net yards for the entire offense.
The cast around him shrank this week. DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) and Britain Covey (knee) are all out. Smith had been averaging 77.5 receiving yards per game. That leaves Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore at receiver, with Dallas Goedert at tight end. Lemon caught McKee's lone touchdown pass in the loss at Dallas.
The baseline was already grim. Philadelphia ranks last in the league in yards per play, at 4.5. Its explosive-play rate (the share of runs of 10+ yards and passes of 20+) ranks 31st. The opening is a Washington pass defense that allows 268.0 passing yards per game, 28th in the league.
Washington's run game has the edge
The cleaner mismatch sits on the other side of the ball. Philadelphia ranks 32nd in EPA per designed run allowed (expected points added: how much each snap moved the offense toward points). The Eagles also give up 131.4 rushing yards per game.
Washington runs for 125.2 yards per game, 9th. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is on injured reserve, so the Commanders plan to lean on Austin Ekeler alongside Rachaad White. The Eagles will be thinner in the middle too: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. starts at linebacker with Jihaad Campbell out.
The Eagles' pass rush offers little relief. Their 3.0% sack rate (sacks per opponent dropback) ranks last, though Nolan Smith cleared concussion protocol, giving them their full group of edge rushers. Washington is still without tackle Laremy Tunsil, who is on injured reserve after triceps surgery.
A battered Commanders front
Washington's defensive interior took heavy hits. Daron Payne suffered a season-ending foot fracture in practice Friday, and Javon Kinlaw (knee) and Jer'Zhan Newton (pectoral) have been ruled out.
That makes Saquon Barkley the Eagle best placed to do damage. He left the Dallas game with hamstring and back issues but carries no injury designation and will play. He is averaging 5.7 yards per carry this season. With Dameon Pierce on injured reserve, Jaydon Blue and Elijah Mitchell back him up.
If Philadelphia gets close, it finishes. Its red-zone touchdown rate of 73.7% ranks 4th, and Washington allows touchdowns on 81.8% of opponent red-zone trips, worst in the league.
Daniels and the turnover edge
Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow earlier this season, but he was a full participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday. So was Marcus Mariota, and Washington hasn't publicly named its starter. Daniels has thrown 5 touchdown passes without an interception and runs for 8.5 yards per carry.
With Terry McLaurin out for the season after knee surgery, Stefon Diggs is the lead target. He sat Wednesday for workload management and returned Thursday. Treylon Burks (foot) and John Bates (shoulder) are questionable.
Ball security is Washington's best trait. The Commanders give it away 0.3 times per game, fewest in the league. Philadelphia's defense forces just 0.4 takeaways per game, 31st, which leaves McKee little help from the other side.
What the market says
Washington sits at -6.5, a move from -4.5 when the line first appeared in our feed. The total has barely budged, sitting at 40.0. The Eagles are 1-6 against the spread, and the forecast calls for a calm, dry night around 50 degrees.
- Whether Daniels starts, and how much he runs
- Washington's carries against the league's worst run defense by EPA
- Barkley's workload against a depleted Commanders interior
- Philadelphia won the Week 1 meeting 24-22; the rematch comes with a very different Eagles offense
