Arizona Cardinals vs Dallas Cowboys prediction: Dak Prescott's clean pocket tests Arizona's big-play problem

Dallas protects its quarterback better than anyone, and Arizona gives up chunk plays more often than anyone, a pairing that explains a touchdown spread and a 54.5 total.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 1, 12:01 PM ET.

Simulated 10,000 times

Dallas Cowboys win 74% of the simulated games, Arizona Cardinals 26%. Median score: Arizona Cardinals 24, Dallas Cowboys 31. Watch the most typical game, play by play.

A simulation of the betting market's view, not a pick: the teams' strength is set so the simulated games average out to the consensus spread and total. Play calls, yardage, sacks, turnovers and the clock come from real NFL plays (2021-24) and this season's usage.

Quick take
  • Dallas should move the ball freely through the air; Arizona's hope is long, clock-eating drives that finally end in touchdowns instead of field goals.
  • Prescott and CeeDee Lamb against an Arizona pass defense ranked 31st in EPA per dropback allowed, with George Pickens questionable.
  • Dallas is a 7-point favorite, up from -6.5, with the total at 54.5; Cowboys games have gone over five times in seven.

Arizona can't stop the chunk play

Arizona has lost three of its last four, and the reason sits in one column. The Cardinals allow explosive plays (runs of 10+ yards, passes of 20+) on 10.9% of snaps, worst in the league. They allow 6.2 yards per play, 31st of 32.

That is a bad problem to carry into a game against Dak Prescott. Dallas allows a sack on just 2.4% of dropbacks, the best rate in the NFL, and Prescott has been sacked only seven times. Arizona's pass rush sits in the middle of the league, 15th in sack rate, which may not be enough to disrupt a quarterback this well protected. On EPA per dropback allowed (expected points added: how much each snap moved a team toward points), Arizona ranks 31st.

CeeDee Lamb is the primary beneficiary, averaging 93.0 receiving yards with six touchdowns. The supporting cast is thinner than usual. George Pickens is questionable with shoulder and hamstring injuries, and KaVontae Turpin is out with a rib injury. Brian Schottenheimer said he was "unphased" by Pickens' status and expects him to play if healthy. Arizona's secondary is banged up too: cornerback Max Melton and safety Andrew Wingard are both questionable with knee injuries.

Long drives, short finishes

Arizona's offense moves, it just doesn't finish. The Cardinals run 67.7 plays per game, second-most in the league, but their explosive-play rate ranks dead last. Jacoby Brissett, confirmed as Sunday's starter, averages 5.7 yards per attempt, and the offense runs through Trey McBride, who leads the team with 59 catches.

The bigger issue is the red zone. Arizona scores a touchdown on 42.9% of trips inside the 20, worst in the NFL. Dallas leads at the other end: 74.1%, third-best.

This is where Dallas' defense could give Arizona life. The Cowboys rank last in EPA per play allowed, and opponents convert 52.9% of third downs against them, also worst in the league. Methodical drives are exactly what this defense tends to give up. Whether Arizona turns them into sevens rather than threes is probably the difference between a close game and a comfortable Dallas win.

The ground game on both sides

Dallas is vulnerable to the run as well, allowing 145.7 rushing yards per game, most in the league. Arizona gets Jeremiyah Love back after he missed two games with an ankle injury. He practiced fully Friday and will play, though he has averaged just 3.7 yards per carry.

The Arizona line in front of him is short-handed. Right guard Jon Gaines II is out with an ankle injury, and center Hjalte Froholdt is questionable after missing Friday's practice.

Javonte Williams comes in hot. He ran for a career-high 155 yards in the 38-21 win at Philadelphia and has eight rushing touchdowns. Arizona's run defense is its one sturdy unit, ranking 10th in EPA per designed run allowed. It is without defensive tackle Walter Nolen III, who is out with an ankle injury.

A line that ignores the history

The market sees a mismatch. Dallas opened at -6.5 in our feed and now sits at -7, and the total crept up from 54.25 to 54.5. Cowboys games have gone over in five of seven, which fits a team that scores 27.0 points per game and allows plenty.

History points the other way. Arizona has won eight of the last nine meetings, including a 27-17 win at AT&T Stadium last November. The Cardinals also showed they can drag a game into the mud: they won 18-16 at the Rams as 12.5-point underdogs in Week 6.

The stakes are higher for Dallas. The Cowboys are the only NFC East team with two division wins. At 3-4 they still trail the 4-2-1 Giants.
