Kansas City Chiefs vs Denver Broncos prediction: Kenneth Walker III gets Denver's weakest unit with first place at stake

Kansas City runs the ball better than anyone in the league, and run defense is the one real hole in an otherwise stingy Denver defense.

Simulated 10,000 times

Denver Broncos win 50% of the simulated games, Kansas City Chiefs 50%. Median score: Kansas City Chiefs 19, Denver Broncos 19. Watch the most typical game, play by play.

A simulation of the betting market's view, not a pick: the teams' strength is set so the simulated games average out to the consensus spread and total. Play calls, yardage, sacks, turnovers and the clock come from real NFL plays (2021-24) and this season's usage.

Quick take
  • Expect a grinding, low-scoring division fight between two offenses that run few snaps and two defenses that rarely give up easy points.
  • Walker, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, against a Broncos run defense ranked 28th in EPA per designed run allowed.
  • Kansas City is a 1-point favorite, down from 1.5, with a 40.5 total; Denver has gone under in five of seven games.

Walker runs at the soft spot

The AFC West lead is on the table this afternoon in Denver, and the winner holds first place alone. The Chiefs took the first meeting 31-10 in Week 1. Since then, the clearest edge in this rematch has formed on the ground.

Kansas City ranks 1st in EPA per designed run (expected points added: how much each snap moves a team toward points). The Chiefs gain 141.5 rushing yards per game, 5th in the league. Kenneth Walker III carries that load with 701 yards and 6 touchdowns, and he averages 5.8 yards a carry.

Denver's defense is built to stop the pass. It ranks 4th in EPA per dropback allowed. Against the run it ranks 28th in EPA per designed run allowed and gives up 133.3 rushing yards per game, also 28th. The depth behind the front is thinning, too. Linebacker Jonah Elliss is on injured reserve, safety Talanoa Hufanga is out with an ankle injury, and safety Brandon Jones and edge rusher Zach Allen are both questionable with hamstring injuries after limited practices Friday. If Kansas City stays on schedule with Walker, it can keep Patrick Mahomes away from the strength of this defense.

Mahomes and a patched line

The worry for Kansas City is last week. In a 20-3 loss at Seattle, Mahomes threw for only 165 yards and an interception behind an injury-weakened line. Left tackle Josh Simmons is on injured reserve with a back injury. Jaylon Moore is set to return from the concussion that cost him Week 7 and carries no game designation.

The season numbers say the protection has held up. The Chiefs allow a 3.3% sack rate (sacks per dropback), 3rd in the league. Denver brings a 7.1% sack rate, 8th, and an Allen absence would take some of that bite away.

Mahomes should get help back. Andy Reid expressed optimism that Rashee Rice will return to the starting lineup, and Rice has no game status. Travis Kelce practiced fully Friday after two limited days with an ankle injury. Tyquan Thornton is on injured reserve. On the other side, Pat Surtain II practiced fully all week and is cleared to return from an ankle sprain.

Denver's third-down problem

The Broncos win with defense and field position because the offense rarely stays on schedule. Denver converts 31.1% of its third downs, 31st in the league, and ranks 29th in success rate (the share of snaps that gain enough to stay on schedule). Bo Nix averages 5.8 yards per attempt.

That runs straight into a Kansas City defense allowing 17.2 points per game, 2nd in the league. The Chiefs also allow touchdowns on just 26.7% of opponent red-zone trips, 2nd as well.

Nix does have openings. Kansas City's pass rush ranks 30th with a 3.5% sack rate, so he should have time. The Chiefs' secondary is short-handed: Mansoor Delane was downgraded to out with a shoulder injury, and L'Jarius Sneed went on injured reserve Saturday. The question is who catches the ball. Jaylen Waddle is questionable with a chest injury he suffered on a late reverse against Arizona, a call Sean Payton later apologized for. With RJ Harvey on injured reserve, rookie Jonah Coleman is slated for a bigger workload next to J.K. Dobbins.

A short line, a low total

The market sees a near-even game. The Chiefs opened at 1.5 in our feed and now sit at -1, so the spread has drifted toward Denver. The total has slipped from 41 to 40.5.

The low number fits both teams. Denver is 5-2 against the spread and has gone under in five of seven games. Kansas City has gone under in four of six. Both teams protect the ball and take it away, so the turnover battle may stay level.

History cuts both ways. Kansas City won the opener in a rout, but Denver had won the three previous meetings, including a 38-0 game in January 2025. The forecast is mild, about 62 degrees with light wind, so weather shouldn't shape the script.

What to watch - Walker's early carries against a front missing Hufanga and possibly Allen - Whether Waddle is active and how Denver moves the ball without him - Rice's snap count in his first game back
