Cleveland Browns vs Pittsburgh Steelers prediction: Deshaun Watson's escape act faces a Steelers pass rush at full strength
Cleveland leads the AFC North behind a quarterback who keeps winning late, but no line in football gives up sacks more often, and Pittsburgh's front arrives with no injury designations.
| Spread | Pittsburgh Steelers -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 39 |
Pittsburgh Steelers win 62% of the simulated games, Cleveland Browns 38%. Median score: Cleveland Browns 17, Pittsburgh Steelers 21. Watch the most typical game, play by play.
- Expect a low-scoring, field-position game where sacks and third downs decide drives more than explosive plays.
- Cleveland's protection, last in sack rate, against a Steelers front with Watt, Heyward and Highsmith all carrying no injury designation.
- Pittsburgh is a 3.5-point favorite and the total dipped to 39; Cleveland won the Week 4 meeting 27-24 as an underdog.
Watson keeps winning from the ground
Deshaun Watson's revival has kept Cleveland atop the AFC North, and it has come with a weekly dose of late drama. He threw for 308 yards and ran for a touchdown in last week's 27-24 win at Tennessee, then led the drive that set up Andre Szmyt's game-winning field goal.
The catch is how often he gets hit. Cleveland allows a sack on 9.7% of dropbacks (sack rate, or sacks per dropback), worst in the league. Watson has gone down 25 times in seven games. That feeds a third-down problem: the Browns convert just 32.6% of the time, 30th in the NFL.
Pittsburgh's pass rush ranks a middling 14th by sack rate, but its stars are available. T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Alex Highsmith carry no injury designation on the final report. Cleveland got one break when right tackle Tytus Howard cleared concussion protocol Saturday after missing the full week of practice, so he has no designation either.
Pittsburgh's best weapon is the run
The Steelers' most efficient unit is one they don't lean on early. They rank 2nd in EPA per designed run (expected points added: how much each snap moves a team toward points), and Jaylen Warren has 561 rushing yards at 5.5 per carry.
Yet Pittsburgh throws on early downs at the 3rd-highest rate in the league, and its passing game ranks 28th in EPA per dropback. Aaron Rodgers also faces his own pressure problem: the Steelers rank 25th in sack rate allowed, while Cleveland's defense sits 6th in sack rate. If Pittsburgh keeps calling early-down dropbacks into that front, Cleveland's best defensive strength gets to play to its advantage.
The red zone may cap whatever the Steelers build. They turn only 47.4% of trips inside the 20 into touchdowns, 28th in the league.
Secondaries held together with tape
Pittsburgh will play without cornerbacks Doneiko Slaughter and Brandin Echols, both ruled out with hamstring injuries. Jalen Ramsey (wrist) has no designation, and safety DeShon Elliott was recently activated from injured reserve. That thins the depth behind the starters against Denzel Boston, Harold Fannin Jr. and KC Concepcion.
Cleveland has its own concerns. Safety Daniel Thomas (ankle) and cornerback Myles Harden (hamstring) are questionable, and defensive tackle Kalia Davis will miss the rest of the season on injured reserve. Grant Delpit and Mike Hall Jr. were full participants Friday with no game status.
The opening for Rodgers is downfield. Cleveland allows explosive plays (runs of 10+ yards, passes of 20+) at a 10.6% rate, 31st in the league. His receiver room is short, though: Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson remain on injured reserve, Ben Skowronek (calf) is questionable, and the team elevated Brandon Johnson for depth. That leaves DK Metcalf, with 374 receiving yards, as the obvious deep target.
A tight number for a tight rivalry
Pittsburgh is favored by 3.5, the same spread our feed first recorded on Oct. 27. The total slipped from 39.5 to 39, a small nudge toward the low-scoring script. Both teams are 5-2 against the spread this season.
Recent meetings have stayed close and low. Cleveland won 13-6 last December, then won 27-24 in Week 4 as a 2.5-point underdog. The Steelers are 3-0 at home and chasing a fourth straight win. The Browns are 2-0 in the division.
Weather won't interfere: the kickoff forecast calls for 65 degrees and a 5 mph wind at Acrisure Stadium.
