Los Angeles Chargers vs Los Angeles Rams prediction: Herbert's battered pocket gets a break: a Rams rush missing Garrett
The winless Chargers come off a bye with Joe Alt back, facing a Rams front so depleted that this may be Justin Herbert's cleanest pocket of the season.
| Spread | Los Angeles Rams -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 45.5 |
Los Angeles Rams win 71% of the simulated games, Los Angeles Chargers 29%. Median score: Los Angeles Chargers 20, Los Angeles Rams 26. Watch the most typical game, play by play.
- Expect the Rams to move the ball steadily while the Chargers' offense lives or dies on Herbert staying upright and holding onto the ball.
- Chargers protection, 31st in sack rate allowed, against a Rams pass rush missing Myles Garrett, Kobie Turner and Poona Ford.
- Rams -6.5 hasn't moved while the total rose to 45.5; the Chargers are 0-5-1 against the spread and score a league-worst 15.0 points.
The pocket Herbert never gets
The Chargers are 0-6, the league's last winless team, and the trouble starts in front of Justin Herbert. They allow a sack on 9.5% of dropbacks (sack rate: sacks per dropback), 31st in the NFL. Herbert has gone down 21 times in six games. An offense that harried can't function, and this one ranks last in EPA per play (expected points added: how much each snap moves a team toward points).
The bye brought help. Tackle Joe Alt, out since Week 4 with a neck injury, isn't on the final injury report and is expected to play. Guard Kayode Awosika (lower leg) has been ruled out, and Tyler Biadasz is lost for the season, so the interior is still being patched together.
The opponent may matter more than the reinforcements. The Rams get sacks on just 4.0% of opponent dropbacks, 28th in the league, and their front is thinner than it has been all year. Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve after knee surgery; as of Oct. 28, Sean McVay said the team wouldn't open his practice window this week. Kobie Turner and Poona Ford are also on IR. If Herbert can't find time against this group, it's hard to see where he will.
Turnovers set the margin
Pressure has turned into giveaways for this offense. The Chargers lose the ball 2.3 times per game, last in the league. Herbert has thrown 8 interceptions in six starts.
The flip side is why the Chargers' defense keeps games within reach. It forces 1.5 takeaways per game, 4th in the league. The Rams are careless enough to oblige, giving it away 1.6 times a game (25th), and their own defense rarely takes it back. A Rams fumble on a short field is the likeliest route to an upset. A Herbert interception is the likeliest route to a lopsided afternoon.
Stafford without Davante Adams
The Rams stay on schedule better than almost anyone. Their 49.0% success rate (the share of snaps that gain enough to stay ahead of the chains) ranks 3rd. Matthew Stafford opened last week's 35-21 win at Las Vegas by completing 17 of his first 19 passes.
He'll do it without Davante Adams, who is on injured reserve after hamstring surgery. That pushes even more volume toward Puka Nacua, who averages 97.0 receiving yards per game and is still working back from a calf tweak.
The Chargers' pass defense has been their one sturdy unit, allowing 216.2 passing yards per game, 6th fewest. But the secondary is depleted. Derwin James went on injured reserve Saturday after a setback in his hamstring rehab, Deane Leonard (concussion) is out, and Donte Jackson (hamstring) is questionable. On the Rams' side, center Coleman Shelton (hip) was limited Friday and is questionable. McVay said he is "hopeful" about cornerback Trent McDuffie (groin), also questionable.
A line that hasn't blinked
The Rams are 6.5-point favorites, unchanged since the line first appeared early in the week, while the total has climbed from 44.5 to 45.5. The market is pricing in more scoring than this Chargers team usually produces: they average 15.0 points per game, last in the league, and they're 0-5-1 against the spread.
The Rams haven't been a comfortable home favorite either. They're 1-3 at SoFi, including a 16-18 loss to Arizona as 12.5-point favorites. The Chargers get 14 days of rest against the Rams' normal week, and Jim Harbaugh voiced continued confidence in coordinator Mike McDaniel after the bye-week adjustments. One small Rams wrinkle: long snapper Joe Cardona (ankle) is doubtful, and McVay said practice-squad snapper Jake McQuaide would step in.
