Baltimore Ravens vs Buffalo Bills prediction: Lamar Jackson returns to test Buffalo's 31st-ranked pass defense

Baltimore's quarterback is back after three missed games, and the Bills' high-scoring offense hasn't been matched by a defense that stops anyone through the air.

Simulated 10,000 times

Buffalo Bills win 61% of the simulated games, Baltimore Ravens 39%. Median score: Baltimore Ravens 26, Buffalo Bills 29. Watch the most typical game, play by play.

A simulation of the betting market's view, not a pick: the teams' strength is set so the simulated games average out to the consensus spread and total. Play calls, yardage, sacks, turnovers and the clock come from real NFL plays (2021-24) and this season's usage.

Quick take
  • Jackson's return makes a shootout plausible: Buffalo scores at will, but its defense ranks 30th in points allowed.
  • Zay Flowers against a Bills pass defense allowing 298.7 yards per game, 31st in the league.
  • Buffalo is a 3-point favorite, down from 3.5; the total sits at 54.5, and Bills games have gone over five of six.

Lamar returns to a soft spot

Baltimore arrives in Orchard Park having lost two straight and sitting last in the AFC North. Buffalo is 5-1 and rested. What changes the whole calculation is that Lamar Jackson is back.

Jackson missed three straight games with a high left ankle sprain, then practiced fully all week and came off the injury report. Coach Jesse Minter said Friday, "we do think we'll have Lamar this week," and Jackson called the ankle pain "bearable." How much he runs on it is the open question.

The gap between him and his backup is the story of Baltimore's season. Jackson averaged 10.1 yards per attempt; Tyler Huntley averaged 6.9. Huntley set a career high in passing yards against Cincinnati last week. The Ravens still blew a 13-0 halftime lead and lost 35-13.

Buffalo's pass defense is where Jackson's arm should matter most. The Bills allow 298.7 passing yards per game, 31st in the league. They rank 29th in EPA per dropback allowed (expected points added: how much each snap moved an offense toward points). Zay Flowers, averaging 101.3 receiving yards per game, faces a secondary that may be missing cornerback Dee Alford, questionable after not practicing with an ankle injury, and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who is suspended.

Buffalo's big-play machine

The Ravens can't count on stops. Buffalo scores 32.8 points per game, best in the league, and leads the NFL in EPA per play. The Bills live on chunk gains: 14.5% of their snaps are explosive plays (runs of 10+ yards, passes of 20+), also tops.

Josh Allen has run for eight touchdowns on top of his passing work, and James Cook averages 5.4 yards per carry. Baltimore's defense sits in the middle of the league, which is not where a team wants to be against this offense.

The ball is the Ravens' likeliest equalizer. Buffalo gives it away 1.5 times per game, 24th. Baltimore hasn't cashed in on many mistakes, though, averaging 0.9 takeaways, 25th.

Allen may be short a pair of targets. DJ Moore (shoulder) is questionable after limited practices but expects to play barring a setback. Tight end Dalton Kincaid (chest) is questionable after being limited all week.

A sixth line for Baltimore

Jackson returns behind a line in flux. Guard Olaivavega Ioane is out with a knee sprain, and Baltimore will start its sixth different offensive line combination of the season, with Andrew Vorhees or Emery Jones Jr. stepping in. The Ravens already allow a sack on 7.6% of dropbacks, 24th.

Buffalo's pass rush gives them some cover: the Bills sack quarterbacks on 4.2% of dropbacks, 25th. That could change with Ed Oliver, who carries no injury designation and is set to play for the first time since Week 4. Right tackle Spencer Brown (back) is questionable on Buffalo's side of the trenches.

On the ground, Derrick Henry is grinding at 3.9 yards per carry. Buffalo ranks 22nd in EPA per designed run allowed, so the Ravens have a reason to keep feeding him and keep Allen on the sideline.

The number and the setting

Buffalo is favored by 3, down from 3.5 when the line first appeared in our feed, and the move came toward Baltimore. The total rose to 54.5, a price that assumes both offenses show up. Bills games have cleared the total five of six times.

Buffalo comes off a bye, while Baltimore plays on normal rest after a lopsided home loss. The kickoff forecast is mild and dry with light wind, nothing that should slow either passing game.

These teams have a habit of close, loud games. Last September's meeting in Buffalo ended 41-40 Bills, and Buffalo also won the January 2025 divisional round matchup here.
