Wisconsin Badgers vs Iowa Hawkeyes prediction: Moulton's absence leaves Iowa searching for offense against Wisconsin's wall

With its lead back gone for the season and Hank Brown back under center, Iowa has to manufacture points against the defense that allows the fewest big plays in the country.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • A low-scoring, field-position game at Kinnick, where one turnover or a long kick return could swing a 36.5 total.
  • Hank Brown against a Wisconsin pass defense ranked 5th in passing EPA allowed, with Kamari Moulton no longer behind him.
  • Our number makes Iowa a 3.58-point favorite with a 36.5 total, essentially matching the current market.

The hole Moulton leaves

The 100th meeting of this rivalry arrives with a ranked Wisconsin team, a Heartland Trophy that hasn't left Iowa City since 2022, and an Iowa offense that just lost its engine. Kamari Moulton is out for the season after hurting his hand at Minnesota. He had 541 rushing yards at 6.3 yards per carry, and nobody else on the roster has carried that load.

Xavier Williams is the obvious next man. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry on the season, but only 2.5 over his last three games. L.J. Phillips is day-to-day, so Iowa may not know its backfield rotation until kickoff.

The opening, if there is one, comes from Wisconsin's run defense. The Badgers rank 127th in stuff rate, meaning they rarely drop runners at or behind the line. Iowa's offensive line ranks 33rd in line yards, a measure of how much push the blockers create. A replacement back who simply falls forward could keep Iowa on schedule.

Brown against a no-fly zone

Ferentz named Hank Brown the starter Tuesday after Brown replaced Jeremy Hecklinski in relief last week. Brown lost the job to a sprained AC joint in Week 5 and is now four weeks removed from it.

His recent form is shaky. Over his last three appearances he completed 53.0% of his passes with three interceptions, and Iowa turned it over four times in the 13-10 loss at Minnesota, which ended on a 46-yard field goal on the final play.

Wisconsin is the wrong defense to get right against. The Badgers rank 1st in explosiveness allowed, so even the plays opponents complete don't go far. They are 5th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) and 3rd in yards per play allowed. Over their last three games, they allowed 9.0 points per game, including the 24-7 win over USC in which the Trojans finished with minus-17 rushing yards and five sacks. That came against a tougher slate than Iowa's: Wisconsin's FBS opponents average a 7.6 SP+ rating, Iowa's 4.5.

Joseph's legs, Iowa's front

Wisconsin's passing game won't scare anyone. The Badgers rank 119th in passing yards per game at 179.4, and Colton Joseph threw for 58 yards against USC. The real offense is Joseph running: 244 rushing yards over his last three games.

That runs straight into Iowa's best unit. The Hawkeyes rank 2nd in rushing EPA allowed and 10th in line yards allowed per carry. They also average 3.14 sacks per game, 7th nationally, though Wisconsin has protected well, allowing 1.14 per game (22nd).

The soft spot in Iowa's defense is the pass, where it ranks 91st in passing EPA allowed. Wisconsin's offense ranks 21st in explosiveness, so a couple of shots downfield to Jacob Harris or Chris Brooks Jr. could decide a game this tight. Darrion Dupree and WR Malachi Coleman are listed as returning, while CB Cai Bates is out and S Marvin Burks Jr. is questionable for the Badger secondary.

Hidden yards and a lopsided streak

Points will be scarce, so the margins matter. Iowa leads the nation with a 41.5-yard kick return average. Both defenses pin opponents deep, with Iowa 6th and Wisconsin 7th in opponents' starting field position. Iowa has a weak point of its own on extra points, converting 90.9% (132nd).

The recent series history is ugly for Wisconsin. Iowa has won four straight, outscoring the Badgers 118-26, including a 37-0 win last season in Madison. "There's a lot of things that haven't gone well for us in this rivalry game," Fickell said Monday. "We need to do a whole lot to change that, and it's not going to be easy."

What the market and model see

Iowa opened as a 4.5-point favorite and has drifted to 3.5, with the move toward Wisconsin. The total sits at 36.5.

Our model lands almost on top of the market: Iowa by 3.58, a 36.5 total, and a projected 20.0-16.5 final. It gives the Hawkeyes a 59.0% chance to win. In the first half, our number has Iowa by 3.18 with a total of 19.45.

Key players

  • Colton Joseph (Wisconsin): He has run for 244 yards over his last three games while throwing for just 269.
  • Sebastian Cheeks (Wisconsin): His 5.0 sacks lead the Badgers, with 2.5 coming against USC.
  • Mason Posa (Wisconsin): The tackle leader with 52 stops, he added 1.5 sacks against USC.
  • Hank Brown (Iowa): Back as the starter, he completed 53.0% of his passes with three interceptions over his last three appearances.
  • Xavier Williams (Iowa): He averaged 7.5 yards per carry on the season but 2.5 over his last three games, and now inherits Moulton's role.
  • Reece Vander Zee (Iowa): He has 173 receiving yards and two touchdowns over his last three games, the hottest hand in Iowa's passing game.
  • Bryce Hawthorne (Iowa): He has 6.5 tackles for loss over his last three games, the spearhead of a front ranked 2nd in rushing EPA allowed.
