Army Black Knights vs Memphis Tigers prediction: Cale Hellums Carries Army's Title Hopes Into Memphis's Soft Run Defense

The nation's best rushing offense faces a Memphis front that can't get stops, so the Tigers will need Marcus Stokes' arm to keep pace.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Army grinds out possessions on the ground while Memphis answers with Marcus Stokes throwing at a pass defense ranked 114th in passing EPA allowed.
  • Hellums and an Army line ranked sixth in line yards against a Memphis run defense ranked 106th in rushing EPA allowed.
  • Our model makes Memphis a 6.5-point favorite, close to the market's 6, with a total of 59.9 against 60.

A title race on the ground

Both teams carry one conference loss into Halloween night, and the winner moves to the front of the line for the American championship game. Army wants its first trip there since 2024. Memphis hasn't reached it since 2019. Jeff Monken left a 38-35 escape at Tulsa unsatisfied: "If we don't play a lot better next Saturday night at Memphis, we're going to be sorely disappointed."

The game runs through Army's option. The Black Knights average 345.7 rushing yards per game, best in FBS. They also rank first in rushing EPA (expected points added per play), so the volume comes with efficiency. Cale Hellums is the engine, with 840 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns this season. He has been even hotter lately, piling up 539 rushing yards over his last three games.

Memphis is poorly built to stop it. The Tigers rank 106th in rushing EPA allowed. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits at 15.9%, which ranks 110th. Against an Army line that ranks sixth in line yards per carry, that is a structural problem, not a bad-week problem. Our projection has Army running for 257 yards.

Stokes has the counterpunch

Memphis's best answer is to score fast and make every Army possession feel expensive. Marcus Stokes averages 9.6 yards per attempt. He has 21 touchdown passes against six interceptions. The Tigers rank 19th in passing EPA, and Army ranks 114th in passing EPA allowed.

Army also struggles to create negative plays. Its havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 125th. That gives Stokes clean pockets to hunt explosive throws. Victor Afolabi is the exception up front, with all three of his sacks coming in the last three games.

The risk for Memphis is giving the ball away. Stokes threw three interceptions in the loss at Tulane, a game in which Braylon Burnside still caught passes for 151 yards. Memphis turns it over 1.5 times per game, 104th nationally, and Army cannot afford to hand back possessions it rarely gets. Wide receiver Tychaun Chapman was held out of the East Carolina win for undisclosed reasons, and his status for Saturday hasn't been announced.

Third down is the pivot

When Army runs this well, the only way to steal possessions is to win third down. Army converts 49.4% of its third downs, 16th nationally. Memphis allows conversions on 30.9%, also 16th. Whichever number holds up likely decides how many drives Stokes gets.

The Memphis defense has also tightened lately. Over its last three games, it has held opponents to a 33.4% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. That trend gives the Tigers a real case that their front is better than the season run numbers suggest.

Takeaways are the other lever. Memphis forces 2.0 per game, sixth in FBS. Army turns it over just 0.29 times per game, the fewest in the country.

Hidden yards and the number

Army has the edge in the kicking game. Its net punting ranks 14th, while Memphis ranks 119th, so the Tigers may start long drives against a defense that rarely gets the ball back quickly. Army's special teams already won it a game: Tim Kloska's blocked punt set up the tying touchdown at Tulsa, and Dawson Jones' 50-yard field goal won it as time expired.

The market opened Memphis -6 and hasn't moved, with the total at 60. Our model barely disagrees. It makes Memphis a 6.5-point favorite with a 66% chance to win, and its total of 59.9 sits right on the market. The likeliest script is Army controlling the clock, Stokes needing explosive plays to cover, and the outcome hinging on third downs and one or two turnovers.

Key players

  • Cale Hellums (Army): He has run for 840 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, with 539 rushing yards in his last three games.
  • Godspower Nwawuihe (Army): He broke out at Tulsa with 135 rushing yards on 12 carries.
  • Victor Afolabi (Army): All three of his sacks have come in the last three games for a defense short on pass rush.
  • Marcus Stokes (Memphis): He averages 9.6 yards per attempt with 21 touchdown passes and six interceptions.
  • Jaylin Carter (Memphis): He has 833 rushing yards at 6.5 yards per carry this season.
