Northern Illinois Huskies vs UNLV Rebels prediction: Jackson Arnold's legs could bury winless Northern Illinois on Halloween night
UNLV's quarterback-run offense gets a Northern Illinois defense that ranks 135th of 138 against the run, and the only real question is whether a 24-point spread is big enough.
| Spread | UNLV -21.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 54.5 |
- UNLV runs Arnold and the zone game at a defense that can't get off the field, while Northern Illinois struggles to move the ball at all.
- Arnold will run against a Huskies front that allows 220.9 rushing yards per game, 135th in FBS.
- Our model makes UNLV a 22.26-point favorite with a 54.5 total, close to where the market sits at UNLV -21.5 and 54.5.
Arnold against a soft middle
Northern Illinois arrives in Las Vegas winless, and the problem starts up front. The Huskies allow 220.9 rushing yards per game, 135th of 138. By rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play on runs), they rank 135th as well. That is a bad draw against Dan Mullen's quarterback-run spread.
Jackson Arnold has 408 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns this season. Teams keep the chains moving against this defense almost at will: opponents convert 61.4% of third downs, dead last in FBS. Recent form is worse than the baseline. Over the last three games, Air Force, Wyoming and Hawai'i posted a 61.1% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) and averaged 41.7 points. Our projection has UNLV for 240 rushing yards.
There is one counterpunch. UNLV's own run defense allows 3.54 line yards per carry (the yardage credited to the offensive line on runs), 136th in the country. Telly Johnson Jr. has averaged 6.6 yards per carry over his last three games. If the Huskies keep it close for a half, his carries are the reason.
Dickens under siege
Taron Dickens rarely gets a clean pocket. Northern Illinois allows 3.29 sacks per game, 134th in FBS. UNLV averages 2.29 sacks per game, 48th, and Andre Porter has three sacks in his last three games.
The Rebels' pass defense is the strongest unit on the field. It ranks 31st in passing EPA allowed. Dickens has averaged 5.9 yards per attempt across his last three starts, and the offense ranks 135th in scoring. DeAree Rogers is the one reliable target, with 57 catches, but a slow, run-first Huskies attack doesn't create many chances to throw its way out of a deficit.
Rest, rumors and an interim
UNLV had two weeks to stew over its loss at Air Force, a game it led in the third quarter before falling 41-31. The Rebels have 14 days of rest; Northern Illinois has seven.
The noise around Mullen is real. Maryland fired Mike Locksley on Oct. 21, and Mullen's name has surfaced on the Terrapins' hot board. "I enjoy being the head coach here," Mullen said Monday, adding that it holds "as long as I get the support of the university and the administration." Starting center Austin Boyd, hurt in the opener against Memphis, is "practicing," Mullen said. Receiver Matt Byrnes is listed as questionable.
Northern Illinois is playing out the string under interim coach Rob Harley, who will keep the job through the season. History offers the Huskies only a sliver of comfort: they are 5-0 all time against UNLV, but the teams haven't played since 2015. The market has been unkind, too. Northern Illinois is 1-6 against the spread and didn't cover as a 3-point underdog at home against Hawai'i in a 56-21 loss.
Hidden yards favor UNLV
Field position is another slow leak for the Huskies. They allow 39.0 yards per kick return, last among 137 FBS teams, which hands opponents short fields after every score. Their kicker has made only 5 of 8 field goals. A UNLV offense that ranks 113th in points per scoring opportunity has been bad at finishing drives, and short fields help cover that flaw.
Where the number lands
UNLV opened as a 24-point favorite, and the line has moved from -24 to -21.5, toward Northern Illinois, with the total at 54.5. Our model sets UNLV at 22.26 and the total at 54.5, giving the Rebels a 92% chance to win. There's no meaningful gap on the side.
The game script points one way. In our testing, when the favorite covers, the favorite's rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If UNLV gets margin, it most likely gets it on the ground. Our first-half number makes the Rebels 12.75-point favorites with a 27.94 total.
