Oregon State Beavers vs Fresno State Bulldogs prediction: Atkinson and Legree carry Oregon State's bowl push into Fresno on Halloween
The country's most prolific passing offense needs one more win for a bowl, and Fresno State's best counter is the hidden yardage around the edges.
| Spread | Oregon State -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 58.5 |
- Oregon State's passing game should drive the scoreboard; Fresno needs field position, takeaways and a slow, run-first script to keep Atkinson off the field.
- Jesse Legree, with 14 touchdowns in seven games, against a Fresno defense ranked 86th in success rate allowed.
- Our fair line is Oregon State by 5.85 with a 58.5 total, essentially matching the market.
Atkinson Is Hitting Everything
Oregon State hasn't been bowl eligible since 2023. One more win on Halloween night in Fresno fixes that, and the Beavers arrive on a five-game win streak behind the nation's most productive passing attack. Fresno State, 1-2 in the Pac-12 after losses to its two biggest rivals, has had two weeks to find an answer.
Braden Atkinson has thrown 24 touchdowns against two interceptions. His last three games were sharper still: 75.2% completions, 13 touchdowns and no picks. Oregon State leads the country at 371.3 passing yards per game and ranks 10th in passing EPA (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each throw moves the scoreboard).
Jesse Legree is why defenses can't sit back. He has 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns, eight of them in his last three games, and he opened the Washington State game with a 90-yard score. The Beavers may add WR Adonis McDaniel, who is expected to make his season debut after a winter Achilles tear.
Fresno's pass defense ranks 61st in passing EPA allowed and 86th in success rate allowed (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule). Its pass rush won't bail it out at 2.0 sacks per game, 67th, against a line that ranks 10th in havoc allowed. The Bulldogs' best weapon is the turnover: they rank 18th in takeaways, and Simeon Harris has three interceptions. Atkinson rarely obliges.
Fresno's Run Game Problem
Fresno State wants this game slow and on the ground, and that's where the Beavers have looked soft. Oregon State's stuff rate (runs stopped at or behind the line) is 15.7%, 115th in the country, and it ranks 92nd in line yards allowed, a measure of the push blockers get.
The trouble is Fresno's own front. The Bulldogs rank 127th in line yards and 116th in rushing EPA, so the blocking rarely creates anything by itself. Rayshon Luke is the home-run threat at 6.4 yards per carry, but he missed the Boise State game with a concussion and no status for this week has surfaced.
If Fresno has to throw, long drives become a grind. Jayden Mandal averages 7.1 yards per attempt and managed 141 yards in the loss at San Diego State, and the offense ranks 104th on third down. Takari Hickle, with 6.0 sacks, gets a line that ranks 88th in sacks allowed.
Hidden Yards Favor Fresno
Fresno's path to a cover runs through field position. Its offense starts drives at the 32.3 on average, 11th nationally, and opponents start at the 24.5, third. Oregon State starts at the 27.4, 104th, and ranks 109th in kick return yards allowed. Last year's 36-27 Fresno win in Corvallis came amid special teams problems for the Beavers.
The Bulldogs are also clean: their 31.0 penalty yards per game rank third, while Oregon State ranks 90th. The counterweight is finishing. The Beavers score 5.02 points per scoring opportunity, fourth in the country, so a short field for Fresno may only buy a field goal while Oregon State cashes touchdowns.
What the Streak Is Built On
Both teams come off a bye with 14 days of rest, so neither gets an edge there. The real question is the quality of Oregon State's run. Its last three opponents rank 104th, 105th and 122nd in SP+, and over those games the offense posted a 60.2% success rate. Fresno's schedule has been softer still by average opponent SP+. Against Boise State, 29th in SP+, the Bulldogs lost 38-31 but covered as a 9.5-point underdog. This is the first meeting between the schools as Pac-12 members.
Where the Number Sits
Oregon State opened at -6.5 and has drifted to -6 across 25 books, with the total at 58.5. Our numbers land in the same place: Oregon State by 5.85, a 58.5 total and a projected 32.2-26.3 Beavers win, which gives Fresno a 36% chance outright. The full-game line offers no edge. The read is the script: Oregon State's passing against a Fresno team that needs to win field position and avoid empty drives.

Numbers that matter
| OSU passing yards per game | 371.3 | First in the country, and Atkinson has been even sharper over the last three games. |
|---|---|---|
| Fresno line yards rank | 127th | Fresno's run-first offense gets little push, even against an Oregon State front that ranks 115th in stuff rate. |
| Fresno opponents' starting field position | 24.5 | Third nationally, the Bulldogs' best tool for slowing an offense they can't stop play to play. |
| OSU points per scoring opportunity | 5.02 | Fourth nationally, so Oregon State turns trips inside the 40 into touchdowns. |
| Market spread | -6 | Oregon State opened at -6.5, and our fair line of 5.85 sits right on the current number. |
