Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders prediction: Brock Glenn's legs test a Middle Tennessee front that never bites

The Blue Raiders rank near the bottom of FBS at disrupting plays, which is bad news against a quarterback who does his best work running, if he's healthy.

Quick take
  • Expect a ground-heavy rivalry game where both offenses find room to run and the team that finishes drives on third down wins.
  • Brock Glenn's scrambles and keepers against a Middle Tennessee defense ranked 135th in havoc rate.
  • Our number calls it a pick'em with Middle Tennessee a 50.0% winner, slightly friendlier to the home side than the market.

Glenn against a soft front

Western Kentucky's bowl hopes are slipping, and the Hilltoppers have won seven straight in this series. Keeping both streaks alive may come down to one question: can Middle Tennessee's defense touch Brock Glenn?

The numbers say probably not. Middle Tennessee's havoc rate, the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, is 10.6%, 135th of 138 FBS teams. Its line yards allowed per carry, a measure of how much push blockers get on runs, is 3.52, also 135th. Opponents stay on schedule against it constantly, and its 47.3% success rate allowed ranks 131st.

That suits Glenn. Western Kentucky ranks 125th in passing EPA (expected points added per play), so the throwing game won't carry the offense. But Glenn runs, with 278 rushing yards over his last three games, including 129 against Delaware. Against a front that ranks 121st in sacks per game, he should find lanes on keepers and time to escape when plays break down.

The catch: Glenn was shaken up late in the fourth quarter against Delaware, and no update on his status has surfaced. If he's limited, Western Kentucky loses its most reliable source of yards.

Open lanes the other way

Middle Tennessee's backs face a similar invitation. Western Kentucky allows 0.194 rushing EPA per play, 128th nationally, and its explosiveness allowed ranks 127th, meaning runs that get started tend to go a long way. The Blue Raiders' offensive line ranks 41st in line yards per carry, the best line number either offense brings into this game.

Terrence Brown Jr. is the back to watch. He averages 6.4 yards per carry and ran for 158 at Florida International. Antonio Martin handles more of the volume, with 586 yards this season.

There is a counterweight. Over its last three games, Western Kentucky's defense held opponents to a 37.0% success rate and 17.0 points per game. Those opponents were Missouri State, Sam Houston and Delaware, though, and Delaware still scored 35 while Western Kentucky was shut out in the second half.

Third downs and giveaways

Roman Gagliano usually protects the ball. Middle Tennessee turns it over 0.75 times per game, 15th nationally. That discipline cracked in the 44-28 loss to Kennesaw State, when Gagliano threw two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.

The bigger worry is third down. The Blue Raiders convert 31.6% of the time, 128th in FBS, and this is where Western Kentucky's defense is at its best, ranking 34th in third-down conversions allowed. If Middle Tennessee's runs leave it in third-and-long, the drives stall.

One hidden edge belongs to the home side: Middle Tennessee's punter averages 49.0 yards gross, 4th nationally, which can keep a short field away from Glenn.

A streak and a schedule

This is the oldest and most-played series in Conference USA, and Western Kentucky leads it 39-35-1. Middle Tennessee hasn't won it since 2018, and every win in the current streak came under Tyson Helton. Both teams are 2-2 in league play, but the urgency sits with the visitors: at 3-5, Western Kentucky is in real danger of missing a bowl for the first time under Helton.

The schedules behind those records differ. Western Kentucky's FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of -1.7, against -6.7 for Middle Tennessee's, so the Hilltoppers' numbers come from tougher competition. Both teams arrive rested after more than a week off.

Where the number lands

Western Kentucky is a 1.5-point road favorite, unmoved since the open, with the total at 53.5.

Our model sees it even closer: a fair score of 26.7 to 26.6 for Western Kentucky and a 50.0% win probability for Middle Tennessee, with a fair total right on the market. With both run defenses this porous, the game script points toward rushing yards, and in our testing rushing yards travel with the over, not the under.
