Quick take
  • Expect a grinding, low-scoring night: Fresno State's big plays and clean ball against a Utah State offense that just found life.
  • Fresno State's run game, 131st in line yards, against a Utah State front that ranks 25th at stopping runs at the line.
  • Our number makes Utah State a 1.4-point underdog, slightly closer than the market's 2.5, and matches the 42.5 total.

Who takes the snaps

Fresno State can clinch a sixth straight bowl season with one more win. The most important question for Saturday night in Logan sits on the other sideline. Utah State hasn't confirmed its starter. McCae Hillstead took over for Grady Brosterhous, who did not play against Colorado State, and no injury report has explained either quarterback's status.

The Hillstead version of this offense looked like a different team. The Aggies beat Colorado State with season highs of 31 points and 464 total yards. They also ran for a season-high 247 yards, and Hillstead carried 11 times for 79 of them. Anthony Garcia had the best day of his career: 11 catches for 121 yards, plus a 44-yard completion of his own.

That game is one data point against a grim season baseline. Utah State scores 16.9 points per game, 134th of 138. Its success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) ranks 128th. Brosterhous has thrown 6 interceptions in seven games. The receiving corps may be thinner too: leading receiver Eli Wood has been reported out with an injury, and his status for Saturday is unconfirmed.

Fresno wins through the air

Fresno State is listed as a run-first team, but its ground game has been its weakest unit. The Bulldogs average 2.62 line yards per carry (a measure of how much push the offensive line creates), which ranks 131st. Their rushing EPA (expected points added per play) ranks 117th.

That is a bad fit against Utah State's best unit. The Aggies allow 2.64 line yards per carry, 25th nationally, and stuff 21.9% of runs at or behind the line, 31st.

The passing game carries this offense. Fresno State ranks 32nd in passing EPA and 22nd in explosiveness. Jayden Mandal has 10 touchdown passes against just 2 interceptions. He averaged 11.9 yards per attempt against Oregon State, throwing two touchdowns and running for two more. Josiah Freeman caught 6 passes for 88 yards and 2 scores in that win. Utah State's pass defense is respectable, 41st in passing EPA allowed, so Mandal will have to earn his chunk plays.

If Bryson Donelson builds on his 108-yard game against Oregon State, Fresno State's offense changes shape. When favorites cover, their rushing yardage tends to go over its line, so a Bulldogs cover probably runs through Donelson finding room.

The hidden-yards gap

This is where Fresno State has its clearest edge. The Bulldogs give the ball away 0.62 times per game, seventh in FBS. Utah State averages 1.5 turnovers, 103rd. Fresno State also takes it away well, ranking 14th in takeaways.

The Bulldogs rank second in penalty yards per game, while Utah State ranks 107th. Fresno State's average drive starts at its own 32.8, ninth nationally.

Utah State also struggles to finish. The Aggies score 2.48 points per scoring opportunity, 134th, and have made 7 of 12 field goals. In a game priced near a field goal, those empty trips could decide it. Utah State's kickoff coverage is another soft spot: it allows 27.3 yards per return, 128th.

Form, schedule and the number

Recent form cuts the other way. Over its last three games, Fresno State has allowed 28.7 points per game, with an EPA per play allowed of 0.181. Utah State allowed just 16.7 points over the same stretch. Context matters, though: the Aggies' last three opponents rank 122nd, 65th and 104th in SP+, while Fresno State faced Boise State and Oregon State.

The full season tells a more complicated story. Utah State has played the tougher schedule, with an average opponent SP+ of 1.1 against Fresno State's -5.7. The ratings still favor the Bulldogs, 61st in SP+ to Utah State's 105th. Fresno State has won its last two trips to Logan. Utah State won last year's meeting in Fresno, coming back from a 17-7 halftime deficit.

The market has Fresno State favored by 2.5, unchanged since the open, with a total of 42.5. Our model sees it slightly closer: a 22-20.5 Fresno State edge, with Utah State winning 46% of the time. The model's total matches the market's 42.5.
