Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs UTEP Miners prediction: UTEP's Quarterback Mess Gives Hawai'i Room Against the Nation's Worst Offense

The Miners don't know who starts under center, and their best counter to Micah Alejado may be a running back who also plays quarterback.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 7, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Hawai'i should move the ball through the air while UTEP's offense stalls, with the Miners leaning on Raymond Moore III's legs for any big play.
  • UTEP's protection, last in sacks allowed, against a Hawai'i front that rarely gets home.
  • Our model makes it Hawai'i by 10 with a total near 49.5, almost exactly where the market sits.

An Offense Without Answers

UTEP's offense was already the worst in the country before its quarterback got hurt again. The Miners score 14.1 points per game, 138th of 138. They convert 26.5% of third downs, also dead last.

EJ Colson came back from injuries at North Dakota State on Oct. 31 and struggled. He finished 11-of-16 for 59 yards with two interceptions, split snaps with Raymond Moore III, and left after getting dinged up on the second pick. UTEP has not said whether Colson starts Saturday night at the Sun Bowl.

Moore is the wrinkle. Listed in our data as a running back, he opened the North Dakota State game with a 57-yard touchdown run on the Miners' first snap. Then the offense went dark in a 31-7 loss. Over its last three games UTEP's success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, sits at 28.8%.

The Pass Rush That Rarely Arrives

UTEP's worst flaw is its protection. The Miners allow 4.75 sacks per game, 138th nationally. Their havoc allowed, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup, is 22.7%, 137th.

Hawai'i is poorly built to exploit it. The Rainbow Warriors average 1.25 sacks per game, 115th, and their own havoc rate ranks 110th. That gives whoever plays quarterback for UTEP more time than the Miners usually get.

There is also a reason UTEP can hang around on single plays. Its explosiveness, the average value of its successful plays, ranks 16th, and Moore averages 6.9 yards per carry. Hawai'i allows 171.9 rushing yards per game, 106th, so a quarterback-run look with Moore is UTEP's most plausible path to points. The catch: Hawai'i's defense has tightened lately, allowing a 39.7% success rate over its last three games.

Alejado Against a Soft Secondary

Hawai'i barely runs the ball and doesn't pretend otherwise. It ranks 22nd in passing yards per game and 136th in rushing yards per game. Micah Alejado has thrown for 2,186 yards this season.

UTEP's pass defense is where that should pay off. The Miners allow 0.386 EPA (expected points added) per dropback, 130th in the country. Alejado's best day came last time out: 323 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-21 rout of Northern Illinois. That opponent ranks 137th in SP+, so treat it as a ceiling, not a trend. Against Arizona State he needed 49 attempts to reach 252 yards.

The turnover battle tilts Hawai'i's way. Safety Jeremiah Hughes has three interceptions in his last three games, and UTEP ranks 115th in turnovers per game.

Hidden Yards and Two Weeks of Rest

Field position should quietly favor Hawai'i. UTEP has made 3/8 field goals this season, last in the FBS, and its net punting ranks 131st. Hawai'i's opponents start drives at their own 26.2, 22nd best.

Hawai'i also arrives with 14 days of rest, while UTEP is on a normal week. One caveat on the records: UTEP has faced the tougher slate, with an average opponent SP+ of 4.6 against Hawai'i's -7.3.

The Miners are 1-6-1 against the spread. The line opened at Hawai'i -9 and hasn't moved across 27 books. Our model makes it Hawai'i 29.9, UTEP 19.8, a hair more on the favorite than the market, with UTEP winning 26% of the time.
