Miami Hurricanes vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish prediction: Miami Loses Malachi Toney and Carries Its Perfect Record Into South Bend
The nation's top passing offense lost its best receiver three days before kickoff, and its own pass defense has been giving up points in bunches.
| Spread | Notre Dame -7 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 54.5 |
- Notre Dame's balanced offense should find room against a Miami defense that has allowed 31.0 points per game over its last three.
- Darian Mensah without Malachi Toney, throwing to Cooper Barkate against a Notre Dame secondary missing DJ McKinney and Brauntae Johnson.
- Our model makes Notre Dame a 7.8-point favorite with a 69% win probability, almost exactly where the market sits.
Life After Toney
Miami arrives in South Bend as the AP's No. 1 team, unbeaten and scoring 47.6 points per game, best in the country. It arrives without the player who made that offense go. Malachi Toney suffered a high ankle sprain in Wednesday's practice and will have surgery, ruling him out Saturday and beyond, with a College Football Playoff return the stated hope.
Toney has 1,027 receiving yards and 13 touchdown catches this season. He was getting better, too: seven of those touchdowns came in the last three games, including a 194-yard night against Pittsburgh.
Darian Mensah has been the most efficient passer in the sport. He completes 80.7% of his passes and has thrown 25 touchdowns, with just one interception. Miami ranks 1st nationally in passing EPA (expected points added per pass play). The question is how much of that was Toney. The next men up are Cooper Barkate, with 372 yards, and Daylyn Upshaw, with 263, and neither has caught a touchdown in the last three games. Miami won last year's meeting 27-24, but this is a different passing game than the one that has carried the Hurricanes all fall.
Miami's Defense Is Slipping
The bigger worry for Miami may be on the other side. Against Florida State, Pittsburgh and North Carolina, the Hurricanes allowed 31.0 points per game, well above their 17.8 season mark. Opponents in that stretch posted a 49.5% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. Miami survived North Carolina 38-35 on Halloween and failed to cover as a two-touchdown favorite.
The soft spot is the secondary. Miami allows 251.9 passing yards per game, 122nd in the country. It ranks 99th in explosiveness allowed, meaning the passes that work against it tend to work big. Cornerback OJ Frees has been out since the season opener.
That is welcome news for C.J. Carr, who needs a good night. Over his last three games Carr has completed 61.2% of his throws at 6.7 yards per attempt, down from 8.3 for the season. He went 27 of 49 in the 28-24 loss at BYU, Notre Dame's only defeat. Still, the Irish rank 8th in passing EPA, and he has thrown one interception all year.
Strength Against Strength Up Front
Notre Dame's ground game is humming, ranking 7th in rushing EPA. The Irish rank 7th in rushing EPA, and Nolan James Jr. has averaged 7.3 yards per carry over his last three games. Jonaz Walton adds 6.9 per carry on the season.
This is where Miami is elite. The Hurricanes allow 60.8 rushing yards per game, 1st among 138 FBS teams, and rank 5th in rushing EPA allowed. Something will bend, and the likely answer is that Notre Dame leans on Carr more than it would like.
That makes protection central. Notre Dame allows 0.25 sacks per game, best in the country, but offensive linemen Charles Jagusah and Chris Terek are listed out. Miami averages 3.0 sacks per game, 10th nationally, and Marquise Lightfoot has seven of them. If Miami can turn Carr's dip into long third downs, its pass defense problems shrink.
Clean Football, Thin Depth
Notre Dame rarely beats itself. It ranks 1st in turnovers per game at 0.25 and 1st in penalty yards, and its defense forces 2.0 takeaways per game, 5th nationally. Miami protects the ball nearly as well but gives away 58.8 penalty yards per game, 83rd.
The Irish defense will be patched together. Green-dot linebacker Drayk Bowen is out with an ankle injury, as are cornerback DJ McKinney and safety Brauntae Johnson. All-American cornerback Leonard Moore and linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa are expected back after each missed two of the last three games. Toney's absence lands at the right time for a secondary this thin.
Notre Dame also plans to honor Lou Holtz on Saturday night, which should make for a loud stadium.
Where the Number Lands
Notre Dame opened as a 3.5-point favorite and now sits at 7.5, with the total at 55. Our model agrees with the move: it makes the Irish 7.8-point favorites with a fair total of 55, projecting 31.4 to 23.6. For the first half, our number is Notre Dame by 4.25 with a total of 28.2.
One tested pattern fits here: when favorites cover, their rushing tends to go over its line. That runs straight into Miami's best unit, so the Irish covering probably requires James and Walton to win a fight the numbers say they shouldn't.
