Vanderbilt Commodores vs Mississippi State Bulldogs prediction: Mississippi State's quarterback crisis collides with Vanderbilt's crumbling defense

Quick take
  • Expect a grind: State leans on the run against a soft Vanderbilt front, while Curtis tests a secondary ranked 129th in passing yards allowed.
  • Watch AJ Swann's throwing arm, or whoever replaces him, behind a line allowing 3.38 sacks per game, 135th nationally.
  • Our model makes Mississippi State a 4.1-point favorite against the market's 3, with our total matching the market at 48.5.

A quarterback room in triage

Mississippi State has averaged 6.0 points across its last three games, and it may not know who its quarterback is until Saturday. Vanderbilt has lost five straight and has been shredded in the process. Both teams need this one to keep bowl hopes alive, so the outcome rests on whichever offense can actually function.

Kamario Taylor is done for the season after foot surgery, and the Bulldogs have lost four straight since he went down. Before the injury he averaged 9.2 yards per attempt. AJ Swann, the former Vanderbilt starter, took a hit to his throwing arm in the second quarter at Texas, on a sack that became a scoop-and-score fumble in a 31-3 loss. He was left off Wednesday's availability report, and Jeff Lebby would only say the Bulldogs are hopeful he plays. Four quarterbacks took practice reps, and Parker Puckett is the backup. Lea, facing his old quarterback, said: "I hope AJ is healthy."

Whoever starts inherits a broken offense. Against LSU, Oklahoma and Texas, State averaged -0.212 EPA per play (expected points added) and stayed on schedule on just 34.0% of snaps. The line allows 3.38 sacks per game, 135th of 138, and left tackle Miles McVay left the Texas game hurt and was also off the initial report.

The relief is that Vanderbilt isn't built to punish it. The Commodores' havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or breakup, is 13.8%, which ranks 108th. Edge Brian Allen Jr. seems likely to play this weekend, barring setbacks.

Vanderbilt's defense keeps giving ground

The most dependable trend in this game may be Vanderbilt yielding yards. Over its last three games, opponents averaged 39.0 points and succeeded on 54.4% of their plays. For the season the Commodores rank 122nd in success rate allowed. Linebackers Josiah Broxton (torn ACL) and Daniel Vollmer Jr. are out, thinning the middle further.

That favors State's run game, the healthier half of its offense at 57th in rushing EPA. Vanderbilt's stuff rate, how often runs are stopped at or behind the line, is 15.4%, which ranks 115th. Our projection has the Bulldogs running for 195 yards. The catch is Fluff Bothwell, who averages 5.2 yards per carry and was also left off the report; Lebby wouldn't discuss him.

Curtis, Sherrill and a soft secondary

Vanderbilt can't lean on the ground: its 106.2 rushing yards per game rank 128th, and running back Evan Hampton broke a bone in his lower leg at Kentucky. That puts the game on freshman Jared Curtis, whose backup Blaze Berlowitz is out.

Curtis has thrown 8 interceptions in seven games, and Vanderbilt ranks 126th in turnovers per game. His best answer is Junior Sherrill, who has 706 receiving yards and caught eight passes in each of the last two games. State's pass defense ranks 129th in yards allowed and 111th in passing EPA allowed. The Bulldogs are also short-handed, with linemen Diesel Moye and Trevion Williams, linebackers Jalen Smith and Derio Gullette, and safety Isaac Smith listed out.

State's pass rush is the one piece that travels. It averages 2.62 sacks per game, 25th nationally, and Jaray Bledsoe has a sack in each of the last two games.

Bye week and bowl math

Vanderbilt arrives with 14 days of rest after its open week, during which Clark Lea's fourth child was born. State is a week removed from Texas. The Commodores are 0-5 in the SEC and need to go 3-1 in November to reach a bowl. State needs two wins in its last four, and this is homecoming in Starkville. Vanderbilt's last four losses all came by double digits, including a 34-17 defeat at Kentucky where Lea said the Wildcats "moved down their sheet faster than we moved down our sheet."

Where the number sits

State opened as a 2.5-point favorite and has moved to 3, with the total at 48.5. The Bulldogs have failed to cover in each of their last four, though three of those came against top-10 SP+ teams. Our model prices State as a 4.08-point favorite, 26.3 to 22.2, and matches the market total. If State covers, it likely does so on the ground. That fits a tested pattern: favorites that cover go over their rushing line far more often than chance would suggest.
