UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls prediction: UMass waits on Pop Watson's ankle with three Buffalo wins behind it
Buffalo has won three straight in the series, and the Minutemen's passing edge depends on who can stand behind center.
| Spread | Buffalo -7.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 42.5 |
- Buffalo runs Burch and plays field position; a healthy Watson gives UMass the passing edge, and without him this turns into a slog.
- Messiah Burch against a UMass run defence ranked 27th in rushing EPA allowed.
- Our model doesn't price this game yet.
Who throws for UMass
William "Pop" Watson III has been the reason the UMass offense works. He completed 74.0% of his passes and averaged 8.2 yards per attempt before an ankle injury kept him out of the Miami (OH) game. He has also run for 4 touchdowns. Joe Harasymiak said Watson would be evaluated this week and that he probably won't know until the team lands in Buffalo. There is cautious optimism internally, but nothing is confirmed.
The depth behind him is thin. Aedan McCarthy hurt his right ankle in the fourth quarter against Miami, and his imaging results were still pending as of Sunday. Third-stringer Logan Inagawa finished that game, and junior college transfer Ty McCutcheon is also an option. UMass still nearly won, losing 20-19 after a failed two-point try with about a second left. Receiver Joseph Griffin Jr. also missed that game, and his status is unclear.
The passing game is the clearest gap between these teams. UMass ranks 36th in passing EPA (expected points added per pass play). Buffalo ranks 118th. The Bulls' pass defence sits 96th in passing EPA allowed, so a healthy Watson, throwing to Jabari Lewis, has room to work. Without him, UMass gives back its best advantage.
Burch carries a stalled offense
Buffalo moves the ball worse than almost anyone. The Bulls average 4.33 yards per play, 137th nationally. Their success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) ranks 130th. Elijah Holmes is out for the season after knee surgery, leaving sophomore Jason Wright as the starter. Wright has completed 48.8% of his passes this season.
So Buffalo leans on Messiah Burch. He has 389 rushing yards over his last three games, including 137 at Toledo. The matchup is the problem. UMass ranks 27th in rushing EPA allowed and gives up 109.8 rushing yards per game. Buffalo's line yards per carry, the rushing yardage credited to the blockers, rank 117th. If UMass wins early downs, Wright faces long third downs behind a line that allows 2.5 sacks per game.
A record built on soft ground
UMass's 4-2 record flatters it. The average SP+ of its FBS opponents is -11.9, while Buffalo's sits at -0.3. The Bulls' schedule included a 55-13 loss at Penn State, where they scored just 13.
Recent form muddies that. Its defence has allowed a 46.3% success rate over the last three games, up from 39.1% across the season. Buffalo's defence has gone the other way, holding opponents to a 37.0% success rate in that stretch. That run included a 23-8 win at Toledo. Buffalo was a 19-point underdog there and has covered its last two.
Where the hidden yards hide
UMass takes care of the ball, committing 0.67 turnovers per game (23rd), and takes it away at 1.83 per game (16th). Buffalo ranks 92nd in giveaways and 106th in takeaways.
The kicking game adds another edge. Buffalo's kickoff coverage is excellent, ranked 2nd, but its punt coverage ranks 87th. For a Buffalo offense that will punt often, that matters.
The series still favours the home side. Buffalo leads 10-6 all time and has won three straight, including a 34-3 rout in the last meeting in Buffalo. This is the second Flagship Cup game.

Numbers that matter

|---|---|---|
| Watson yards per attempt | 8.2 | UMass's passing edge depends on whether Watson's ankle lets him play. |
| UMass rushing EPA allowed | 27th | A stout run defence against Buffalo's one working weapon, Burch. |
| UMass opponent SP+ | -11.9 | The Minutemen's 4-2 record came against a far softer slate than Buffalo's. |
| UMass punt return average | 1st | Buffalo's punt coverage ranks 87th, a real risk for a stalled offense. |
