Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Oregon Ducks prediction: Oregon's quarterback fog could hand Dylan Raiola a homecoming against Nebraska

With Dante Moore still in concussion protocol, Oregon may send its former Husker passer into the best third-down defence in the country.

Quick take
  • Oregon has the better roster, but without Moore its passing game stalled against UCLA. Nebraska's run game and third-down defence can keep this tight.
  • Oregon's unnamed quarterback against a Nebraska defence ranked 8th in passing EPA allowed and 1st on third down.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

One hit, two quarterbacks

Oregon's season has turned on a single hit. Dante Moore was carted off at USC on Sept. 26, remains in concussion protocol and sat out the loss to UCLA, though his MRI and CT scans came back clean. Lanning said Monday there is a competition at quarterback if Moore can't go, and Oregon hasn't named a starter.

With Moore, this offense is ruthless. He has thrown 9 touchdowns and no interceptions in four games, at 9.4 yards per attempt. Without him, it nearly vanished. Dylan Raiola completed six of 19 passes for 43 yards with two interceptions against UCLA before Brock Thomas replaced him. Thomas threw for 156 of Oregon's 199 passing yards, all in the fourth quarter, and the Ducks lost 17-15.

Raiola transferred out of Nebraska this offseason, so a second straight start would put him across from the program he left. "It's going to be weird," he said.

The defence waiting for him is a bad draw for a shaky passer. Nebraska ranks 8th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much damage opposing passers do) and allows third-down conversions just 19.7% of the time, best in the country. Oregon's 317.4 passing yards per game, 7th nationally, came mostly with Moore under center.

Colandrea and the ground game

Nebraska wins by running. Its rushing EPA ranks 3rd of 138, and it converts 52.4% of third downs, 9th nationally. Anthony Colandrea has become the engine: 221 rushing yards over his last three games, including 108 against Maryland and a 39-yard touchdown run that put Nebraska up 17-6 on Indiana.

It allows 2.6 line yards per carry (yards credited to blockers on a run), 28th nationally. But it rarely wins in the backfield. Oregon ranks 124th in tackles for loss and 97th in sacks, which gives Colandrea time to extend plays.

His arm is the question. Jamal Rule is back from a lower-body injury, but managed only 53 yards on 15 carries in his return.

Where hidden points live

Ball security splits these teams. Nebraska turns it over 0.5 times per game, 11th nationally. Oregon gives it away 1.8 times per game, 118th, and that was before a quarterback switch. The Ducks do take it back: their 2.0 takeaways per game rank 9th, and safety Koi Perich has picked off passes in each of his last two games.

The kicking game leans hard to Oregon. Nebraska has made 4/8 field goals, 126th nationally, while Oregon is 6/6. Against a defence that ranks 42nd in points allowed per scoring opportunity, Nebraska's drives that stall near the goal line may come away empty.

Nebraska's one defensive soft spot is the big play. It ranks 120th in explosiveness allowed, a measure of how much damage successful plays do. Oregon's offense ranks 26th in explosiveness, so a healthy Moore could punish it.

Schedules and the number

Nebraska's 5-1 record came against FBS opponents averaging a -0.2 SP+ rating. Oregon's opponents average 13.0. Nebraska's only top-tier test was Indiana, ranked 5th in SP+, and it lost 20-17 while covering as an 8.5-point underdog. Nebraska is 5-0-1 against the spread this season.

The ratings systems see two close teams. SP+ places Oregon 12th and Nebraska 14th, and SRS ranks them tied at 13th. The market has Oregon -12.5, down from a -12.8 open, with the movement toward Nebraska. Moore's status is the swing variable for that number.
