UConn Huskies vs Air Force Falcons prediction: Air Force turns to a third quarterback with a bowl bid in reach
With Liam Szarka and Evan Medders both out, the Falcons' nation-best run blocking has to carry an unnamed starter against a UConn offense built on big plays.
| Spread | UConn -1 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 52.5 |
- Expect Air Force to grind on the ground behind a new quarterback while UConn hunts big plays against a defense ranked 95th in explosiveness allowed.
- Air Force's top-ranked line against a UConn run defense that ranks 28th in rushing yards allowed but 98th in stuff rate.
- Our model calls it a pick'em at Air Force -0.09, about 1.4 points friendlier to UConn than the market.
Next man up, again
Air Force needs one more win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2023. It will chase that win with a new starting quarterback. Liam Szarka is out for the year with a lower-leg injury, Evan Medders is out with turf toe, and Troy Calhoun spent the week calling the job an open competition. UConn, which beat the Falcons 26-16 last season in East Hartford, arrives looking for a third straight win.
The depth chart lists senior Josh Johnson and freshman Howard Fisher IV. Fisher could get the nod, which would make him the first Falcons freshman to start at quarterback since 2013. Calhoun said Medders will miss at least this week and maybe more. That loss stings beyond the position: Medders ran for 381 yards and five touchdowns over the last three games.
The line has to carry it
The option still runs through the blockers, and nobody blocks better. Air Force averages 337.4 rushing yards per game, 2nd in the FBS. It ranks 1st in line yards per carry, a measure of the yardage credited to the offensive line on each run, at 3.75. It also allows havoc (tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, interceptions and pass breakups) on just 6.9% of plays, best in the country.
That unit now plays without senior guard Alec Falk. UConn's run defense is a real test. The Huskies allow 107.9 rushing yards per game, 28th, and rank 40th in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play). Where they give ground is at the line of scrimmage. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 16.8%, 98th. That points to a long day of four- and five-yard gains. Owen Allen, with 238 yards and three touchdowns over his last three games, is the steadiest ball carrier left.
Where UConn breaks it open
UConn ranks 5th in explosiveness, which measures how much value an offense gets from its successful plays. Air Force ranks 95th at limiting it. Cyncir Bowers averages 7.0 yards per carry and has 378 yards over his last three games, including a 70-yard touchdown run against UMass. Kalieb Osborne throws for 8.8 yards per attempt, with 12 touchdowns against 2 interceptions. He hasn't thrown a pick in his last three games.
When opponents get close, the Falcons give up touchdowns. They allow 4.07 points per scoring opportunity, 116th. UConn's most glaring weakness on offense is protection: it allows 3.14 sacks per game, 131st. This is a soft landing spot for that flaw. Air Force averages 1.29 sacks, 114th, and 3.0 tackles for loss, 136th.
Hidden yards and loose balls
Air Force converts 52.9% of its third downs, 8th nationally. UConn allows 39.4%, 86th, and every extended drive keeps Osborne on the sideline. The Huskies also give away field position, averaging 82.0 penalty yards per game, 133rd. Their kicking is shaky. UConn has made 4 of 7 field goals. Air Force has made 9 of 10.
The counterweight is Air Force's own sloppiness. The offense lost three fumbles at Wyoming, and the loss there ended a four-game winning streak. The Falcons also committed eight penalties for 65 yards. A new quarterback handling the ball on every option snap only raises that risk.
The market and our number
The line has moved from Air Force -1.5 to UConn -1 since it opened, so the market now makes the Huskies the slight favorite. The total sits at 52.5. Neither record came against a hard schedule: UConn's FBS opponents average an SP+ of -7.3, and Air Force's average -5.2. UConn has covered in 5 of 7 games with a line.
Our model treats this as a true toss-up. It makes Air Force a 0.12-point favorite with a 50.0% win probability. That rates Air Force 0.9 points better than the market does. Our fair total of 52.18 is close to the market's 52.5.

Numbers that matter
| Air Force line yards rank | 1st | The nation's best run blocking has to carry a new quarterback without guard Alec Falk. |
|---|---|---|
| UConn explosiveness rank | 5th | UConn's big-play offense faces an Air Force defense ranked 95th at limiting explosive plays. |
| Air Force points per opportunity allowed | 4.07 | This ranks 116th, so UConn drives that cross the 40 tend to end in touchdowns. |
| UConn sacks allowed per game | 3.14 | UConn ranks 131st here, but Air Force's pass rush ranks 114th in sacks. |
| UConn penalty yards per game | 82.0 | UConn ranks 133rd, and each flag hands back yards that Air Force's ball-control offense can use. |
