UCLA Bruins vs Minnesota Golden Gophers prediction: UCLA's suffocating defense faces a Minnesota offense that can't run
The unbeaten Bruins bring the nation's best defense by EPA to Minneapolis, where a stalled Gophers attack needs field position and a perfect kicker to pull off a third home upset.
| Spread | UCLA -4 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 38.5 |
- UCLA grinds on the ground and leans on a defense allowing 5.7 points per game lately; Minnesota needs short fields and its perfect kicker.
- Minnesota's front, 137th in line yards per carry, against a UCLA defense ranked 1st in EPA allowed per play.
- Our model makes UCLA a 6.1-point favorite and agrees with the 39.5 total, very close to the market.
Nowhere to go for Minnesota
UCLA arrives at Huntington Bank Stadium unbeaten, ranked fifth in the AP poll and perfect against the spread. Over its last three games its defense has allowed 5.7 points per game. Minnesota is heading the other way: it lost at Indiana in overtime after reaching the 3-yard line, when Drake Lindsey was sacked on third down and again on fourth. The Gophers have already pulled off two home upsets this fall. A third depends on whether they can move the ball at all.
The Bruins rank 1st of 138 in EPA allowed per play (expected points added, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard). They also lead the country with 3.25 takeaways per game. Opponents convert 26.4% of third downs against them, 2nd nationally.
That is a brutal draw for this offense. Minnesota ranks 137th in line yards per carry, which measures the push a front creates on runs, and 131st in rushing EPA. Its success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, sank to 26.0% over the last three games. Lindsey averaged 5.0 yards per attempt in that stretch and 3.2 at Indiana. The line is thinner this week, with Brett Carroll and Ashton Beers out and tight end Pierce Walsh doubtful. Backup quarterback Michael Merdinger is also out, and P.J. Fleck is sticking with Lindsey and coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr. through the final four games.
The Gophers' one opening is that UCLA's front is missing edge Ryan McCulloch and lineman Ashton Sanders.
Dieffenbach and the grind
Bob Chesney confirmed on Oct. 19 that Nico Iamaleava is out for the season, so Ty Dieffenbach makes his fifth start. UCLA hasn't needed him to throw much. The Bruins run for 219.5 yards per game, 12th nationally, and rank 8th in line yards per carry. Their passing offense sits 92nd in yards per game.
This offense rarely hits big plays. UCLA ranks 131st in explosiveness, so it wins by staying on schedule and leaning on the defense. Minnesota's defense can disrupt that script: its havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 8th at 20.6%.
The backfield has shifted. Wayne Knight has 12 rushing touchdowns, but he has averaged 3.4 yards per carry over the last three games. Anthony Woods has averaged 6.2 in that span. Guard depth matters too, with Eugene Brooks returning, Sam Yoon out and Jordan Davis doubtful. Receiver Brian Rowe Jr. is probable after leaving the Nevada game.
The schedule behind 8-0
UCLA's record is cleaner than its schedule is hard. The average SP+ rating of its FBS opponents is 0.1, compared with 5.5 for Minnesota. Its last two wins came against Michigan State and Nevada, both ranked outside the SP+ top 88. The résumé game is the 17-15 win at Oregon as a 10.5-point underdog.
Minnesota has made a habit of hanging around. The Gophers beat Michigan 20-14 and Iowa 13-10 at home as underdogs, then covered as 20.5-point underdogs at Indiana. They are 6-2 against the spread, and they won the last meeting in this series, 21-17 at UCLA in 2024.
Where hidden yards decide it
In a game with a 39.5 total, field position and kicking may decide the margin. Both teams win the field-position battle: UCLA's average start ranks 2nd nationally, and Minnesota's ranks 5th. Minnesota's kicker is 16 of 16 on field goals. UCLA has made 8 of 12, which ranks 102nd.
UCLA also gives away yards. It averages 74.0 penalty yards per game, 127th in the country, and its punter is out. Against an offense this limited, short fields and free flags are how Minnesota scores.
What the number says
UCLA opened as a 6.5-point favorite, and the line has moved to 5.5 in Minnesota's direction. Our model makes it UCLA by 6.1, with a 22.8-16.7 score, and gives Minnesota a 35.0% chance to win. It lands exactly on the 39.5 total.
That leaves our number slightly closer to the opening line than the current one. If UCLA covers, it will probably be because the run game works. In our testing, a favorite's cover goes together with that favorite's rushing going over its line.
