UCF Knights vs Kansas Jayhawks prediction: Quarterback questions cloud Kansas's bowl push against road-weary UCF

Isaiah Marshall's status and Alonza Barnett III's return shape a game that the market and our model both price inside a field goal.

Quick take
  • A ground-heavy game where Kansas's rushing attack decides it, with quarterback status unsettled on both sides until kickoff.
  • Kansas's run game, 22nd nationally in rushing yards, against a UCF defense that ranks 27th in rushing EPA allowed.
  • Our model makes Kansas a 2.7-point favorite with a 47.5 total, nearly identical to the market's Kansas -2.5.

Two quarterback rooms in flux

Kansas is 3-5 and two losses away from being eliminated from bowl eligibility. UCF hasn't won a road game in its last 12 tries. Both teams arrive at Memorial Stadium unsure who will take the snaps, which makes this week's availability report the most important document in the game.

Isaiah Marshall started Kansas's first seven games, then missed the 22-16 loss at TCU with a lower-leg injury. Leipold said Monday it was "Too early to tell yet right now." Marshall, Cole Ballard and Chase Jenkins were all listed as questionable on Wednesday. Ballard started at TCU, where Kansas blew a 13-point lead in the third quarter.

Marshall matters because he is the engine of a quarterback-run spread. He has 403 rushing yards this season. His arm is less reliable: he completes 53.6% of his passes. The offense has sputtered lately, posting a 34.2% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) over its last three games.

UCF has its own swap. Keyone Jenkins left the 41-9 loss to Baylor with an ankle injury and isn't expected to start. He finished with just 82 passing yards on 14-of-21 against Baylor. Alonza Barnett III, sidelined since a Sept. 12 hamstring injury, is probable and poised to return, and Frost said he is healthy. Barnett inherits an offense that ranks 93rd in EPA per play (expected points added) and 106th on third down.

Kansas runs into UCF's best unit

Kansas runs for 202.2 yards per game, 22nd nationally. That collides with the one part of UCF's defense that holds up. The Knights rank 27th in rushing EPA allowed and 28th in line yards allowed (the yardage credited to blockers on each run).

The difference Marshall makes showed in Dylan Edwards's last two games. With Marshall in the lineup against Baylor, Edwards ran for 156 yards. Without him at TCU, Edwards managed 42 yards on 20 carries.

Flip it, and UCF's own run game looks outmatched. The Knights rank 110th in line yards, while Kansas's stuff rate (runs stopped at or behind the line) ranks 22nd. Duke Watson has been UCF's best weapon, but his yards per carry has dipped to 4.5 over the last three games.

Where UCF can strike back

The Knights' path runs through the margins. Kansas turns the ball over 1.62 times a game, 115th in the country. Its average starting field position ranks 118th, and its kick coverage ranks 132nd, against a UCF return game that ranks 18th.

Kansas also stalls once it gets close. It ranks 111th in points per scoring opportunity, while UCF ranks 25th. That gap is how a UCF team with the weaker offense could steal a road win.

The risk for UCF sits in its secondary. The Knights rank 118th in passing yards allowed and gave up 38.0 points per game over their last three, so a healthy Marshall throwing deep could flip the script.

Where the number lands

Kansas opened at -2.2 and has drifted to -2.5, with the total at 47.5. Our model makes it Kansas by 2.7 with the same total, so there is no real gap between our number and the market. The quarterback news, especially any word on Marshall before kickoff, is the swing factor that could move this line.
