Toledo Rockets vs Eastern Michigan Eagles prediction: Toledo's big-play offense needs to reawaken against Eastern Michigan's secondary

The Rockets carry the better ratings and the third-most explosive offense in the country, but they arrive off an 8-point flop at an Eastern Michigan team still unbeaten in MAC play.

Quick take
  • Toledo should find chances through the air against a soft pass defence; Eastern Michigan needs long drives and Kessinger's leg to keep pace.
  • Richter's downfield passing against an Eastern Michigan pass defence ranked 103rd in passing EPA allowed.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

Richter's deep game went quiet

Toledo's offense is built on chunk plays. The Rockets rank 3rd of 138 in explosiveness, which measures how much damage their successful plays do. They are only 82nd in success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. In other words, this is a team that lives on the big strike rather than the steady march.

That formula stalled against Buffalo. Toledo, a 19-point favourite at home, lost 23-8. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak and handed the Rockets their first home loss since 2024. John Alan Richter went 22-of-35 for 203 yards, his second straight game at 5.8 yards per attempt or worse. Two weeks earlier he averaged 12.9 yards per attempt against San Diego State.

The season line still looks sharp: 13 touchdowns and 1 interception at 8.3 yards per attempt. Eastern Michigan's pass defence is the right opponent for a rebound. The Eagles rank 103rd in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) and 97th in passing yards allowed per game. If Richter gets Adjatay Dabbs and Bryson Hammer loose, the Buffalo game looks like a blip.

Eastern's surge, sorted by opponent

Eastern Michigan has won three straight and is unbeaten in conference play. Over that run the offense posted a 48.7% success rate and allowed 13.3 points per game. Those numbers are well above the Eagles' season baseline, where they rank 124th in yards per play.

The schedule explains much of it. The streak came against FCS Lindenwood, UMass (107th in SP+) and Akron (132nd), and the Akron win needed a 48-yard field goal with 1:50 left to finish 25-23. The one ranked-caliber opponent, Wisconsin, beat Eastern 54-10.

Toledo's slate has been softer still: its FBS opponents average -11.4 in SP+, against -9.9 for Eastern. Even so, the ratings separate these teams clearly. Toledo sits 82nd in SP+; Eastern Michigan sits 113th.

Can Eastern hit anything big?

Toledo's defence has a clear profile. It ranks 10th in success rate allowed, so opponents rarely stay on schedule. It also ranks 109th in explosiveness allowed, so the plays that do work tend to go a long way. Buffalo proved it with an 87-yard touchdown run that sealed the game.

Eastern Michigan is poorly built to exploit that weakness. The Eagles rank 119th in explosiveness and 122nd in rushing yards per game. Noah Kim is a short-area passer at 5.9 yards per attempt this season. Expect Eastern to try to string together long drives, which is exactly what Toledo's defence usually stops.

Zock against a clean pocket

Toledo protects Richter as well as almost anyone, allowing 0.5 sacks per game, 7th nationally. Eastern Michigan's front creates disruption, ranking 39th in havoc rate (the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup). Quincy Byas had 2 sacks against Akron.

On the other side, Andrew Zock is the most dangerous defender in the game. He has 3.5 sacks in his last three games and 5 on the season. Eastern allows 1.14 sacks per game, and Kim offers little as a scrambler, so Zock's matchup with the Eagles' tackles matters.

Kicks, returns and hidden yards

This is where Eastern Michigan can steal the game. Toledo has made 5 of 9 field goals, 125th nationally. It allows 25.2 yards per kick return, 120th. It also gives away 69.0 penalty yards per game, 112th.

Eastern starts drives at its own 25.9 on average, 127th, so it needs every short field it can get. Rudy Kessinger made four field goals against Akron, and Eastern is 9 of 12 on the season.

  • Richter's yards per attempt in the first half
  • Whether Eastern can produce any play of 20-plus yards
  • Toledo's field-goal unit if drives stall in the red zone
  • Eastern's homecoming run: five straight wins, though only 2-3 against Toledo on homecoming

Key players

  • John Alan Richter (Toledo): He has 13 touchdowns against 1 interception, but his yards per attempt fell to 5.8 against Buffalo.
  • CJ Miller (Toledo): He averages 7.2 yards per carry over his last three games, including 196 yards at Ball State.
  • Adjatay Dabbs (Toledo): Toledo's leading receiver has 402 yards and 4 touchdowns this season.
  • Andrew Zock (Toledo): He has 3.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss over his last three games.
  • Noah Kim (Eastern Michigan): He threw for 277 yards against Akron but averages 5.9 yards per attempt this season.
  • Joshua Long (Eastern Michigan): He caught 9 passes for 114 yards in the Akron win.
  • Quincy Byas (Eastern Michigan): He leads the Eagles with 4.5 sacks, 2 of them against Akron.
