The Citadel vs Texas A&M Aggies prediction: Marcel Reed and a stalled Texas A&M offense get an FCS reset
The Citadel arrives at Kyle Field as an FCS opponent with a -39.4 SRS rating, which makes this game less about winning and more about whether Reed's passing game shows any life.
- Texas A&M should control this on defense and field position, but the real story is whether Reed's passing produces points instead of field goals.
- Reed against his own recent form: no touchdown passes and three interceptions over his last three games.
- Our model doesn't price this game yet.
Reed needs a clean afternoon
Texas A&M has scored 15.3 points per game over its last three, against LSU, Arkansas and Missouri. The only points in the 27-6 loss at Missouri came from David Olano's leg. An FCS visitor is the obvious place to change that.
The passing game is the problem. Marcel Reed has not thrown a touchdown pass in three games, completing 50.0% of his throws with three interceptions. At Missouri he went 19 of 39 for 187 yards and two picks. A week earlier at LSU he completed 10 of 26.
The season numbers back this up. A&M's passing EPA (expected points added per play) is -0.011, which ranks 125th of 138. Its explosiveness, the average value of its successful plays, ranks 130th. The offense moves the chains sometimes but almost never breaks a big play.
Elko is sticking with Reed. On Monday he said switching to backup Brady Hart "doesn't feel like it's the move that will help us," though his tone has softened. Hart is the only backup with college snaps, and true freshman Helaman Casuga is behind him. If Reed struggles early against The Citadel, the questions will get louder.
A thinner line, a split backfield
A&M will also be without offensive lineman Blake Ivy, who is out for the season. That hurts a front that ranks 64th in line yards per carry (how far runs get before the backs have to make something happen) at 3.1.
The carries have been divided. Rueben Owens has the volume, 74 carries at 4.1 yards each, but he had only four touches on the ground at Missouri. KJ Edwards has done more with less: 5.9 yards per carry and two touchdowns in the Arkansas win. Against an FCS front, Edwards could get his biggest workload of the season.
Field position does the quiet work
The best part of this A&M team doesn't show up in the offensive rankings. The Aggies' average drive starts at their own 32.8, 10th in the country. Their gross punting average of 50.1 ranks second. Olano has made all 10 of his field goals, including a 53-yarder at Missouri.
The defense adds to that hidden yardage. Opponents convert only 29.0% of third downs (14th), and A&M forces 1.67 takeaways per game (24th). The weak spot is the pass rush: 0.83 sacks per game ranks 131st. A Citadel quarterback who gets time could keep some drives alive.
What The Citadel brings
The Bulldogs are 2-4 and winless in three Southern Conference games. They lost 34-16 to No. 24 East Tennessee State last week. Their SRS rating is -39.4, and the only FBS team they have played is Charlotte.
That game is the reason to take them a little seriously. As 20.5-point underdogs in the opener, they won 43-41 at Charlotte. Gavin Garcia ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Zyion Freer-Brown had 11 tackles, a sack and an interception.
Recent form is less encouraging. Their offense stayed on schedule on only 35.4% of plays.
The quarterback situation is unclear. Quentin Hayes entered the season as the starter, but his current status is unknown. Sophomore Xavier Hill threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass against ETSU.

Numbers that matter
| A&M passing EPA rank | 125th | Few FBS passing games produce less value per throw than the Aggies'. |

| A&M points, last 3 | 15.3 | Scoring per game over the LSU, Arkansas and Missouri stretch. |
| A&M starting field position | 32.8 | Ranks 10th nationally and makes up for a lot of the offense's weakness. |
| Third-down conversion allowed | 29.0% | A&M's defense ranks 14th at getting off the field. |
| The Citadel SRS | -39.4 | A rating that shows how far apart these teams are. |
