Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates prediction: Temple's ground game runs into East Carolina's run-stuffing front

The Owls win by running the ball, and ECU's defense blows up runs at the line better than almost anyone, which leaves a shaky Pirates offense as Temple's best hope.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • ECU's front should slow Temple's run game, but the Pirates' turnover habit and unsettled quarterback spot keep Temple within reach.
  • Temple's rushing attack, 26th in yards per game, against an ECU defense that stuffs 29.4% of runs, third nationally.
  • Our model makes ECU a 6.33-point favorite, essentially the market's 6, with a fair total of 49.58 against 49.5.

Where Temple's offense stalls

Both teams arrive in Greenville with bowl hopes slipping, Temple at 2-5 and East Carolina at 3-4. The Owls have one clear identity: they run. ECU has one clear strength: it stops the run before it starts.

Temple averages 202.4 rushing yards per game, 26th nationally. Its line ranks 22nd in line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the blockers create. East Carolina is a terrible draw for that plan. The Pirates post a 29.4% stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, third in the country. They also average 9.43 tackles for loss per game, second nationally.

If the ground game bogs down, Temple turns to Ajani Sheppard's arm. He has been efficient, at 9.4 yards per attempt with no interceptions all season. The risk is protection. ECU gets 2.57 sacks per game, 25th nationally, and Temple's line has been average at keeping its quarterback clean.

The bigger worry is finishing. Temple scores just 3.29 points per scoring opportunity, 109th. The Owls move the ball and then settle, and against this front, chances will be scarcer.

ECU's unsettled quarterback spot

East Carolina's offense is the reason this game isn't a bigger spread. Emory Williams has averaged 4.6 yards per attempt over his last three games, and Mitch Griffis replaced him during the overtime loss at Memphis. Harrell said Monday that quarterback evaluations would continue, and ECU hasn't publicly confirmed a Week 9 starter. Our projection has Griffis starting.

Whoever plays inherits a unit that converts 31.0% of third downs, 130th nationally, and gives the ball away 1.86 times per game, also 130th. The Memphis loss ended on an interception. The steadiest piece is TJ Engleman, who averages 6.5 yards per carry and gives ECU a way to stay on schedule without asking much of the passer.

A Temple defense that rarely disrupts

The good news for ECU's quarterback is that Temple almost never makes plays behind the line. The Owls' havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, is 9.8%, 137th of 138. That blunts the matchup ECU fears most: its line allows havoc on 19.5% of plays, 134th.

Third down is where Temple's defense has broken. Opponents convert 50.0% of the time, 135th, which offers ECU's 130th-ranked third-down offense a rare opening. Henry Baker is calling the defense as interim coordinator, and Temple dismissed defensive end Quante Gillians on Monday with no reason given. The Owls' last outing was a 38-31 loss to Charlotte in which they allowed 281 passing yards.

Hidden yards and old history

Field position has quietly hurt Temple all year. Its offense starts drives at the 25.5-yard line on average, 133rd nationally, and ECU's punter, 14th in gross average, won't help that. The flip side: Temple protects the ball, at 0.86 turnovers per game, 29th, while ECU's giveaways can hand back the field.

Temple comes off a bye with 14 days of rest. Keeler blamed himself and his staff for the start, rejecting the idea that resources were the problem. The series has been one-sided lately, with ECU winning all five meetings in the packet, including 45-14 last season.

Where the number lands

ECU is a 6-point favorite, unchanged since the open, with the total at 49.5. Our model agrees almost exactly, pricing ECU by 6.33 with a projected 28.0-21.6 score. If ECU covers, it most likely does so on the ground, since a favorite's cover and its rushing total tend to move together. Our fair first-half line is ECU -3.25.

Key players

  • Ajani Sheppard (Temple): He averages 9.4 yards per attempt with no interceptions on 120 throws and has run for 331 yards.
  • Keveun Mason (Temple): The lead back has 513 yards at 5.5 per carry, but he faces a front that ranks third in stuff rate.
  • Peter Clarke (Temple): He has 238 receiving yards and two touchdowns over his last three games, including 127 against Charlotte.
  • Kevin Hornbeak Jr. (Temple): His 4.5 tackles for loss lead the listed Owls defenders on a unit that rarely gets into the backfield.
  • TJ Engleman (East Carolina): He has 582 rushing yards at 6.5 per carry and is ECU's most reliable source of offense.
  • Emory Williams (East Carolina): He has averaged 4.6 yards per attempt over his last three games and was replaced by Mitch Griffis at Memphis.
  • Kieran Davis (East Carolina): His 8.0 tackles for loss anchor a defense that ranks second nationally in that stat.
  • Preston Carr (East Carolina): He has 2.0 sacks over his last three games, against a Temple line that allows 2.14 per game.

Numbers that matter

ECU stuff rate29.4%Third nationally, a direct threat to a Temple offense built on the run.
Temple havoc rate9.8%137th of 138, so Temple can't exploit an ECU line that ranks 134th in havoc allowed.
Temple 3rd-down defense50.0%135th nationally, an opening for an ECU offense that converts just 31.0%.
ECU turnovers per game1.86130th nationally, the most likely way Temple stays inside the number.
Temple points per scoring opportunity3.29109th, so the Owls move the ball but too often settle for field goals.
