South Carolina Gamecocks vs Oklahoma Sooners prediction: Oklahoma's patched-up line has to survive South Carolina's pass rush
The Sooners' defense can slow LaNorris Sellers, but the game turns on whether a reshuffled front can keep John Mateer upright and careful with the ball.
| Spread | Oklahoma -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 44.5 |
- Expect a grinding game: Oklahoma's defense slows Sellers while the Sooners' offense leans on Mateer's arm against a vulnerable Gamecocks secondary.
- Oklahoma's reshuffled offensive line, possibly without center Jake Maikkula, against a South Carolina rush averaging 2.57 sacks per game.
- Our model has Oklahoma by 5.31 with a 44.27 total, right on top of the market.
A line held together loosely
Oklahoma's defense was good enough to beat Texas. Its offense was bad enough to lose to Kentucky at home. On Saturday in Norman, the Sooners send a reshuffled offensive line against a South Carolina front that finishes sacks, and the Gamecocks arrive off a walk-off win over Tennessee.
Oklahoma's blockers have been the problem all season. The Sooners average 2.65 line yards per carry, a measure of the push blockers create before a back reaches the second level, and that ranks 129th of 138. Their rushing EPA (expected points added per play) ranks 137th.
The lineup keeps changing. Center Jake Maikkula was hurt at Mississippi State and is questionable, and one report lists him as out. If he can't go, Western Kentucky transfer Caleb Nitta steps in, and Oklahoma would start its seventh different line combination in eight games. Lineman Fred Hinton is also questionable.
South Carolina has the rush to take advantage. The Gamecocks average 2.57 sacks per game, 25th nationally, and Oklahoma allows 2.43, which ranks 105th. Dylan Stewart has two sacks in his last three games. The catch is that South Carolina rarely creates anything beyond the sack. Its havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 100th.
Mateer's open window
South Carolina's secondary is the softest unit on the field. The Gamecocks allow 0.333 passing EPA per play, 117th nationally. Passing is also the one place Oklahoma's offense works: its passing EPA ranks 65th.
Mateer showed what that looks like at Mississippi State, completing 75.9% of his throws. Isaiah Sategna caught eight passes for 164 yards that day. Nickel Quay'Sheed Scott is doubtful after missing the Florida and Tennessee games, so South Carolina's coverage depth gets tested again.
The risk is Mateer himself. He has thrown 7 interceptions, three of them in the home loss to Kentucky. As a team, Oklahoma gives the ball away 2.14 times per game, 136th. South Carolina forces only 0.86 takeaways per game, 111th, but it may not need to force many.
Sellers runs into a wall
South Carolina's offense is built on the ground. It ranks 10th in rushing EPA and 7th in line yards per carry, even with three offensive linemen on this week's out list. Sellers drives it. He has 263 rushing yards over his last three games, and against Tennessee he accounted for 306 total yards and three touchdowns.
Oklahoma's defense is the best unit in this game. It ranks 3rd in EPA allowed and 5th in success rate allowed (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule). Opponents convert just 23.6% on third down, 2nd nationally.
The Gamecocks' backs have faded, which puts more of the load on Sellers. Matthew Fuller is averaging 3.9 yards per carry over his last three games, down from 5.7 for the season. Safety Peyton Bowen is questionable but has two interceptions in his last three games, and Venables said Bowen "is good." Wide receiver Mazeo Bennett left the Tennessee game after a hit but is not on the injury report.
Finishing drives and field goals
Both teams have a finishing problem, on opposite sides of the ball. South Carolina's offense scores 4.52 points per scoring opportunity, 21st nationally, but its defense allows 4.17, which ranks 121st. Oklahoma is the reverse. Its offense manages 2.97 points per scoring opportunity (119th), and its defense allows 2.51 (7th).
Oklahoma's kicking makes that worse. The Sooners have made 11 of 17 field goals, a 64.7% rate that ranks 110th. Opponents also start drives at their own 31.5-yard line on average, 129th, partly a cost of all those turnovers.
Where the number sits
Oklahoma opened as a 5.5-point favorite and has drifted to -5. The total sits at 44.5. Our model makes it Oklahoma by 5.31 with a 44.27 total, so it finds no real gap with the market on either number.
It projects a 24.8-19.5 final and gives the Sooners a 63% chance to win. For the first half, our fair line is Oklahoma -3.35 with a 23.11 total.

Numbers that matter
| Oklahoma line yards rank | 129th | The Sooners' line creates almost no push, and the center position may change again. |
|---|---|---|
| South Carolina passing EPA allowed | 117th | The Gamecocks' pass defense is the clearest weakness Oklahoma can attack. |
| Oklahoma 3rd-down conversion allowed | 23.6% | This ranks 2nd nationally and is the main obstacle to Sellers extending drives. |
| Oklahoma turnovers per game | 2.14 | This ranks 136th and is the Sooners' biggest way to lose a game their defense keeps close. |
| Market spread | Oklahoma -5 | The line is down from -5.5 and almost matches our model's 5.31. |
