Quick take
  • Expect points: Rutgers' big-play passing against Maryland's pass rush, while a struggling Maryland offense gets its softest defensive opponent in weeks.
  • Rutgers' protection, 110th in sacks allowed, against a Maryland front that ranks 24th in sacks per game.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

Washington needs a soft landing

Rutgers shows up at 1-4 with questions of its own. Both teams are winless in conference play, and one of them leaves SECU Stadium with a first Big Ten win.

The game turns on whether Malik Washington can find himself again. Over his last three games he completed 49.5% of his passes, with one touchdown against six interceptions and 4.3 yards per attempt. Four of those picks came in the 54-3 loss to UCLA. Maryland's offense posted a 25.1% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) across that stretch and averaged 14.0 points.

Context matters, though. Those three opponents were UCLA, Nebraska and Ohio State, ranked 18th, 14th and 1st in SP+. Rutgers is nothing like that. The Scarlet Knights allow 6.72 yards per play, 130th of 138, and rank 128th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play). Locksley and his players have backed Washington publicly, and this is the matchup that should let him breathe.

The ground may be the easier road. Rutgers gives up 199.2 rushing yards per game, 127th, and 3.22 line yards per carry, 115th. DeJuan Williams has averaged 8.3 yards per carry on 29 attempts this season.

Duff's big plays against the rush

Rutgers moves the ball through the air in chunks. The offense ranks 18th in explosiveness and 42nd in passing EPA per play. KJ Duff carries most of that load, with 628 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Dylan Lonergan, named the starter, averages 8.4 yards per attempt but has thrown five interceptions to go with his seven touchdowns.

Maryland's best counter is its front. The Terps average 2.67 sacks per game, 24th nationally, and Zion Elee has 3.0 sacks. Rutgers allows 2.6 sacks per game, 110th. If Elee and company get home early, Lonergan's downfield shots dry up.

If they don't, Maryland's back end is exposed. Locksley discussed Dontay Joyner taking on a larger role in an injury-depleted secondary. Duff against that patched-up coverage is the matchup most likely to swing the scoreboard.

Rutgers can't lean on the run to protect Lonergan. Its line yards per carry rank 105th and its rushing EPA ranks 121st. Antwan Raymond has run for 293 yards over his last three, but managed 31 yards on 11 carries against Indiana.

Turnovers and hidden yards

Both offenses give the ball away, and only one defense takes it. Rutgers turns it over 2.0 times per game, 131st of 138. Maryland ranks 31st with 1.5 takeaways per game. Washington's interception run gives Rutgers chances too: Moses Walker and Bradlee Jones each have two picks.

Rutgers wins the discipline battle outright. The Scarlet Knights rank 1st in penalty yards with 26.6 per game, while Maryland gives up 67.7, 108th.

Field position tilts the same way. Maryland's net punting average of 36.0 ranks 125th, and Rutgers' gross average of 46.6 ranks 23rd. Maryland also bleeds points once opponents get close: it allows 4.79 points per scoring opportunity, 136th. Rutgers doesn't need many trips to cash in.

Rest, schedule and recent history

Maryland comes off a 45-16 loss at Ohio State, where Locksley cited three-and-outs and turnovers and said he needs to "make it good enough." Greg Schiano has said he has no concerns about his own job.

The records hide a schedule gap. Maryland's FBS opponents average an SP+ of 14.0, against 6.7 for Rutgers. The ratings still favour the Terps slightly: Maryland sits 81st in SP+ and Rutgers 94th. Rutgers' recent form is also inflated by a 58-7 win over FCS Howard.

Rutgers has the recent edge in the series, winning 31-17 at Maryland in 2024 and 35-20 at home last season. No betting line has been posted yet.
