Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn State Nittany Lions prediction: Ryan Browne's arm tests the pass defense propping up Penn State

Purdue throws as well as almost anyone in the Big Ten, and winless-in-conference Penn State still defends the pass better than almost anyone in the country.

Quick take
  • Penn State should grind out drives against a Purdue defense ranked 135th in EPA allowed, while Purdue needs chunk throws to keep pace.
  • Browne and Asaad Waseem against a Penn State secondary allowing 141.3 passing yards per game, third in FBS.
  • Our model makes Penn State a 10.6-point favorite, slightly more than the 9.5-point market line, with a 75% home win probability.

Purdue's arm hits a wall

Penn State is 0-4 in the Big Ten, still chasing a first conference win under Matt Campbell. An 11-game winning streak over Purdue is about the only thing that feels safe in Happy Valley right now. Purdue arrives at 3-4, eyeing bowl eligibility, with a passing game good enough to make Halloween uncomfortable.

The Boilermakers throw for 280.7 yards per game, 22nd nationally. Their passing EPA (expected points added per play) ranks 29th. Ryan Browne averages 8.2 yards per attempt on the season, and Asaad Waseem is the target that matters, with 588 receiving yards and 116 of them against Washington.

The defense waiting for them is the best unit in this game. Penn State allows 141.3 passing yards per game, third in FBS, and ranks 14th in passing EPA allowed. Third down is worse news for Purdue: the Nittany Lions allow conversions on 28.7% of tries, sixth nationally. Browne has also cooled, completing 57.6% of his passes over his last three games. We project Purdue for 216 passing yards, well under its usual pace.

The softest spot on the field

If Penn State's pass defense is the strength here, Purdue's defense is the weakness. The Boilermakers rank 135th of 138 in EPA allowed per play. They allow 48.7% of third downs to be converted, 132nd, a gift to a Penn State offense that converts only 36.2% of its own.

Penn State wants to run, though its line hasn't cooperated. It ranks 123rd in line yards per carry, the rushing yardage credited to blocking up front. Purdue gives some of that back, ranking 121st in rushing EPA allowed. We project Penn State for 159 rushing yards.

The receiver room is the wild card. Chase Sowell, with 314 yards over his last three games, is questionable with an undisclosed injury. Koby Howard is also questionable and hasn't played since Week 3, though Campbell said he is "progressing in a really positive way." Howard piled up 344 yards in the three games he did play.

A slump with context

Campbell has no plans to change quarterbacks, so Rocco Becht starts. His recent form is shaky: four interceptions over his last three games, with his yards per attempt down to 6.8. His fourth-quarter strip-sack at Michigan pushed Penn State into a 21-11 hole in a game it lost by three.

The defense has drifted too, allowing a 49.1% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) over the last three games. That stretch came against Northwestern, USC and Michigan, all inside SP+'s top 27. Purdue's schedule has been tougher overall, with an average opponent SP+ of 12.0. Penn State's sits at 2.5.

Purdue's protection is the thing to watch. The Boilermakers allow 2.29 sacks per game, 100th, and Tony Rojas has three sacks in his last three games. Help may be coming: left tackle Joey Tanona, who hasn't played this year, was left off the availability report, as was nickel Mister Clark. Penn State will be without safety Omarion Davis, defensive end Max Granville and linebacker Alex Tatsch, and Purdue starting safety Jaden Mangham is questionable.

Hidden yards and the number

Purdue owns the kicking game. It ranks 13th in gross punting and ninth in field-goal percentage. Penn State's punt coverage ranks 128th, a field-position hole against a team that can't afford to give any away.

The market has moved toward Penn State despite the conference skid. The line opened at 7.8 and now sits at 9.5. Our model lands a touch higher, at Penn State by 10.6. It projects a 32.5-21.9 final, close to the 54.5 total.

One tested pattern fits the likely script: when a favorite covers, its rushing tends to clear its line. Purdue's run defense ranks 95th in yards allowed, so a Penn State cover probably runs through the ground game.

Key players

  • Ryan Browne (Purdue): Averages 8.2 yards per attempt on the season but has completed just 57.6% over his last three games.
  • Asaad Waseem (Purdue): Leads the team with 588 receiving yards and caught nine passes for 116 against Washington.
  • Fame Ijeboi (Purdue): Has nine rushing touchdowns and ran for 195 yards against Minnesota, but managed 19 against Washington.

  • Rocco Becht (Penn State): Threw four interceptions over his last three games after a season mark of 7.9 yards per attempt.
  • Chase Sowell (Penn State): Questionable after 314 yards over his last three games, including 151 at Michigan.
