Oklahoma State Cowboys vs Kansas State Wildcats prediction: Kansas State's quarterback carousel lands on Barnett against Oklahoma State's firepower
Blake Barnett becomes the Wildcats' fourth starter in four games, and he has to keep pace with a Cowboys offense scoring 41.1 points a game.
| Spread | Oklahoma State -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 62.5 |
- Oklahoma State moves the ball efficiently through the air while Kansas State leans on its run game and third downs to stay within a touchdown.
- Kansas State's ground game against an Oklahoma State front that could be missing two defensive tackles and a starting linebacker.
- Our number sits right on the market: Kansas State +5.8 against a +6 line, with a fair total of 62.1.
Four starters, four weeks
Kansas State is about to make unwanted history. Blake Barnett gets the start Saturday, making him the Wildcats' fourth starting quarterback in four games, a first in the program's modern history. Avery Johnson has missed the last two games with a neck injury, and Collin Klein said there's only an "outside chance" he returns this season. Jacob Knuth is also out.
Barnett earned the job in the 27-24 double-overtime loss at Colorado. He took over in the second quarter and threw three touchdowns. That was a spark, but the broader trend is grim. Over the last three games the Wildcats have averaged 0.06 EPA per play (expected points added per play), well off their season mark of 0.189. Their success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, has dipped to 41.1%.
The Wildcats have dropped three of their last four and sit 1-4 in Big 12 play. A home win over a 5-3 Oklahoma State team would rescue the season. A loss pushes bowl eligibility to the edge.
Mestemaker against the bend-don't-break secondary
Drew Mestemaker runs one of the country's most productive passing offenses. Oklahoma State averages 338.8 passing yards per game, 3rd in FBS, and Mestemaker is at 9.4 yards per attempt with 25 touchdowns against 7 interceptions. He has been even sharper lately: 1,074 yards and 12 touchdowns over the last three games.
Kansas State's pass defense looks strong by yardage, allowing just 151.9 passing yards per game (7th). The underlying profile is stranger. The Wildcats rank 20th in success rate allowed, so they usually keep offenses behind schedule. But they rank 135th in explosiveness allowed, which measures how much damage opponents do on the plays that do work. When something gets through, it gets through big.
That suits Oklahoma State, which wins with consistency rather than chunk plays: 6th in success rate but 101st in explosiveness. The Cowboys also protect well, allowing 1.0 sack per game (12th), which blunts a Kansas State defense that ranks 17th in havoc (the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup). Justin Bowick and Wyatt Young have combined for 17 receiving touchdowns. Tight end Carson Kolb is out.
Where Kansas State can win it
The Wildcats' path runs on the ground. They average 205.5 rushing yards per game, 19th nationally, and Oklahoma State gives up 154.4 (86th). The Cowboys' front may be thin: defensive tackles Jaleel Johnson and Landon Dean and linebacker Tate Romney are all doubtful.
The other half of that matchup favors Oklahoma State. Caleb Hawkins ran for 194 yards at Iowa State and is at 6.3 yards per carry over his last three games. Kansas State ranks 106th in rushing EPA allowed, so the Cowboys can take the air out of the ball when they need to.
Kansas State's best weapon may be patience. The Wildcats convert 53.0% of third downs (5th) and turn the ball over just 0.75 times per game (15th). Long drives keep Mestemaker on the sideline, and they fit a new quarterback who needs manageable throws.
Hidden yards cut both ways
Oklahoma State gives the ball away 1.62 times per game, 115th in FBS. Normally that is an opening for an underdog, but Kansas State takes it away just 0.62 times per game (133rd). LaDainian Fields, with four interceptions in his last three games, makes Barnett's turnover risk the more dangerous one.
Field position tilts toward the Wildcats. They net 45.1 yards per punt (12th), while Oklahoma State ranks last at 138th in kick return average. Oklahoma State answers with a reliable kicker, 18/19 on field goals.
The Cowboys' defense is the reason this line isn't bigger. Oklahoma State has allowed 36.7 points per game over its last three, including the 51-49 loss at Iowa State decided by a field goal as time expired.
Market, model and history
The line opened at Kansas State +5.5 and has moved to +6, with the total at 62. Oklahoma State is 6-2 against the spread and has faced the tougher slate, an average opponent SP+ of 3.9 against Kansas State's -0.2.
History pushes back. The Cowboys haven't won in Manhattan since 2020, and Kansas State won the last two meetings, including 14-6 in Stillwater last year. All three of Oklahoma State's losses this season came on the road.
Our model makes it 34.0 to 28.2, a fair spread of Kansas State +5.8 that is almost exactly the market's. It gives the Wildcats a 36.0% chance to win. If the Cowboys do cover, expect Hawkins to be part of the reason: favorites that cover tend to run the ball well.
