Northwestern Wildcats vs Oregon Ducks prediction: Chip Kelly returns to Autzen as Oregon's offense hunts for a pulse

Oregon has lost its starting quarterback and fired its play-caller, and Northwestern's ruthlessly efficient offense arrives with its coordinator coming home to Eugene.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a grind: Oregon's defense holds up, but its offense has averaged 14.0 points over three games against a Northwestern team that protects the ball.
  • Aidan Chiles and Griffin Wilde's big-play passing game against an Oregon defense ranked 100th in explosiveness allowed.
  • Our fair line is Oregon -4.06 against the market's -3.5, and our 47.41 total sits on 47.5. No meaningful edge either way.

Oregon's offense starts over

Dante Moore is done. Lanning said Monday his quarterback isn't expected back in 2026 after the concussion he suffered against USC on Sept. 26. Oregon hasn't officially named a starter, though Dylan Raiola is the most likely option after starting at Illinois.

Raiola's recent stretch explains why this line has moved. Over his last three games he completed 56.4% of his passes for 4.5 yards per attempt. The low point came against UCLA, when he went 6-of-19 for 43 yards. He was steadier at Illinois, but Oregon still lost 21-10 after Illinois scored the last 21 points.

Oregon fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer after that loss. Jay Johnson, a veteran coordinator who had been working as an analyst, takes over play-calling with one week to install his ideas. He inherits a run game that ranks 95th in rushing EPA (expected points added per play) and a third-down offense that ranks 107th.

The line is thinning. Trent Ferguson is out for the season, Dave Iuli is having surgery and Immanuel Iheanacho is questionable. The help is on the perimeter: Evan Stewart, Jalen Lott and Messiah Hampton are off the availability report after missing Illinois. Stewart alone has 352 receiving yards in five games.

Kelly's offense comes home

Chip Kelly once ran Oregon from this sideline. Now he calls plays for Northwestern, arriving the same week the Ducks fired their own coordinator. His unit ranks 7th in EPA per play and 12th in success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule.

Aidan Chiles makes it go. He has completed 71.3% of his passes at 9.9 yards per attempt, and he has nine rushing touchdowns. He accounted for five touchdowns in last week's 42-14 win over Rutgers. Griffin Wilde is the target to know, with 334 receiving yards over the last three games.

This is where Oregon's defense can crack. The Ducks rank 11th in third-down defense, so drives against them rarely stay alive on schedule. But they rank 100th in explosiveness allowed, meaning the plays that do succeed tend to go big. Northwestern ranks 13th in explosiveness.

Oregon's counter is pressure. Teitum Tuioti has 4.5 sacks in his last three games, and Northwestern ranks 88th in sacks allowed per game. Kelly will want the ball out quickly or in Chiles' hands on the move. Running between the tackles is harder: Oregon ranks 21st in line yards allowed, while Northwestern's line ranks 78th in line yards.

The schedules behind the records

Northwestern's 6-1 record and Oregon's 4-3 mark were built against very different slates. The Wildcats' FBS opponents average an SP+ rating of 0.2; Oregon's average 12.3, with USC, UCLA and Nebraska all inside the SP+ top 20.

Northwestern's last three opponents were Ball State, Michigan State and Rutgers, and it only edged the Spartans 24-21. Its best win came at home over Penn State, 34-13, as an underdog. Northwestern has never reached the College Football Playoff, and a win here keeps that chase alive. Oregon's playoff hopes are likely gone; this is about salvaging a season.

Hidden yards cut both ways

Northwestern almost never beats itself. It turns the ball over 0.43 times per game, 3rd nationally, while Oregon gives it away 1.71 times per game, 120th. With a new play-caller and a shaky quarterback, that gap is the clearest path to an upset.

Oregon claws some of it back on special teams. The Ducks rank 5th in net punting and 1st in punt return average allowed. Northwestern ranks 124th in net punting, which helps explain why its offense starts drives 98th in average field position. Expect Oregon's defense to defend a long field often.

Where the number sits

This line opened at Oregon -7.5 and has been bet down to -3.5. The market has watched Oregon fail to cover in each of its last three games as a favorite, part of a 2-5 record against the spread, while Northwestern is 5-2. The Ducks won last year's meeting 34-14 at Northwestern, but that was a different Oregon offense.

Our number barely disagrees with the market. We make Oregon a 4.06-point favorite with a 60% chance to win, essentially where the line sits after the move. Our total of 47.41 lands on the market's 47.5.
