Quick take
  • Northwestern's efficient passing should build a lead; Michigan State needs field position and short fields to keep pace.
  • Aidan Chiles against a Spartans pass defence ranked 111th in passing EPA allowed.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

Chiles comes home throwing

There is plenty of history on the sidelines. Pat Fitzgerald coached Northwestern for 17 seasons before he was fired in 2023, and on Saturday he faces his alma mater for the first time. The quarterback across from him is a former Spartan: Aidan Chiles, now the engine of a 4-1 Northwestern team ranked 25th.

Chiles has been close to flawless. He is completing 71.4% of his passes at 10.5 yards per attempt, with 9 touchdowns and no interceptions, and he has added 6 rushing scores. Under offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Northwestern ranks 9th nationally in passing EPA, or expected points added per pass play.

Michigan State has struggled most against exactly that. The Spartans rank 111th in passing EPA allowed, and their defence creates almost nothing behind the line: 128th in tackles for loss per game. Griffin Wilde is the target to follow. He caught 8 passes for 144 yards against Ball State and has scored 3 touchdowns in the last three games. Luke Dehnicke, who had 140 yards at Indiana, carries a questionable tag.

A pocket that keeps collapsing

Michigan State's offense has a protection problem. The Spartans allow 3.17 sacks per game, 128th nationally, and rank 106th in havoc allowed, the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup. Alessio Milivojevic swings with that protection. He managed just 3.2 yards per attempt at Wisconsin, then completed 84.6% of his throws against Illinois.

This could be the week the pressure eases. Northwestern's pass rush ranks 97th in sacks per game, so Milivojevic should get more clean pockets than he has had in Big Ten play. The ground game is thinner. Camryn Edwards has been reported out for the season with a leg injury, which leaves the load to Jaziun Patterson, who scored three times against Illinois but averages 4.1 yards per carry over his last three games. Backup quarterback Cam Fancher hurt his knee at Wisconsin, and his status for Saturday hasn't been confirmed.

Northwestern bends, rarely breaks

Northwestern's defence is not airtight between the 20s. It ranks 104th in success rate allowed, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, and 109th in line yards allowed per carry. Michigan State can move the chains against this group.

The trouble comes later in drives. The Wildcats rank 26th in explosiveness allowed and give up only 2.85 points per scoring opportunity, 24th nationally. That suits them, because Michigan State's offense ranks 133rd in explosiveness and 98th in points per scoring opportunity. The Spartans have to string together long drives and then convert them. Over their last three games they averaged 17.7 points while allowing 33.3, all losses.

One caution on Northwestern's numbers: the Wildcats' FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of 2.2, against 8.0 for Michigan State's tougher slate. Still, Northwestern covered as a 20-point underdog in a 29-23 loss at Indiana and won 34-13 over Penn State as an underdog.

Field position is the Spartans' lever

If Michigan State has an edge, it shows up in the kicking game. The Spartans rank 5th in net punting, while Northwestern's gross punting average of 37.4 yards ranks 137th of 138. That gap helps explain why Michigan State starts its drives 26th nationally in field position and Northwestern sits 106th.

The Spartans can't count on turnovers to shorten the field further. Northwestern gives the ball away 0.4 times per game, 6th in the country, and Michigan State ranks 132nd in takeaways. The Spartans have lost three straight, the last a 38-37 overtime defeat after erasing a 17-point Illinois lead. Northwestern is two wins from bowl eligibility. For Michigan State to win, it probably needs short fields from punts and Northwestern's 61.8 penalty yards per game, because the turnover margin looks unlikely to deliver them.

What to watch

  • Chiles on early downs: Northwestern ranks 8th in EPA per play overall; quick completions keep MSU's defence on the field.
  • **
  • Spartan protection: whether Milivojevic stays upright against a modest Northwestern rush.
  • Punts: every exchange tilts toward Michigan State.
