Northern Illinois Huskies vs San Jose State Spartans prediction: San José State's pass rush has winless Northern Illinois squarely in its sights
The Spartans sack quarterbacks as well as almost anyone in FBS, and the 0-8 Huskies protect theirs as poorly as almost anyone.
| Spread | San José State -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 52.5 |
- San José State should control this on the ground and in the backfield, but its own stalled offense keeps NIU within shouting distance.
- Jayland McGlothen and the Spartans' rush, fifth in sacks per game, against an NIU line that ranks 125th in sacks allowed.
- Our model makes San José State an 11.8-point favorite with a 77% win probability, slightly more than the market's 10.
Dickens under siege
Northern Illinois arrives at CEFCU Stadium still hunting for its first win under interim coach Rob Harley. Rob Harley took over after Thomas Hammock left in February to coach the Seattle Seahawks running backs. The Huskies are 0-8. The quickest way for that to become 0-9 runs straight through Taron Dickens' blind side.
San José State averages 3.44 sacks per game, fifth in FBS. Northern Illinois allows 3.0 per game, 125th. McGlothen leads the way with 6 sacks, and 3.5 of them came in one afternoon against UTEP. Aizik Mahuka adds 4 sacks, and so does Dylan Lee.
Dickens has felt the squeeze. His completion rate over the last three games is 56.1%, down from 63.6% on the season, and he needed 44 attempts to reach 216 yards at Wyoming. The Huskies' one real strength is run blocking: they rank 35th in line yards per carry, which measures the push a line gets on running plays. Telly Johnson Jr. has cashed that in at 7.2 yards per carry over his last three games. If NIU can stay on schedule with Johnson, Dickens avoids the long-yardage downs where this rush feasts.
Which Spartan takes the snaps
San José State's own quarterback picture is muddier. Daniel Rolovich, dealing with an undisclosed injury, is in the mix to start if healthy, and Ken Niumatalolo said, "We'll see how he is this week." Luke Weaver is projected to start.
Weaver's last three outings produced 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions despite 7.5 yards per attempt, the profile of a passer who moves the ball and then gives it back. His last start ended with a missed fourth-and-5 to Carson Clark and a game-ending interception. The offense around him has stalled: a 30.8% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) over the last three games, and a 31.7% conversion rate on third down that ranks 127th.
This is the right opponent to fix that. Northern Illinois allows conversions on 59.6% of third downs, dead last in FBS. Its havoc rate, the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or breakup, ranks 137th. Whoever starts should see clean pockets and manageable downs.
A run defense that won't hold
The Huskies give up 218.8 rushing yards per game, 133rd, and rank 135th in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play). Over their last three games opponents scored 42.7 points per game against them.
San José State hasn't run well, ranking 121st in rushing EPA, and Jabari Bates has slipped to 3.3 yards per carry over his last three games. Viliami Teu is the more dangerous back at 6.0 yards per carry, highlighted by 156 yards against UTEP, a defense in the same tier as this one. Feeding Teu is the Spartans' cleanest path to a margin. Favorites that cover tend to be the ones whose ground game hits.
Hidden yards favor the hosts
Northern Illinois gives away points in the margins. The Huskies have made just 6/11 field goals and score 2.55 points per scoring opportunity, 133rd. Their kick coverage allows 32.9 yards per return, last among 137 teams, which hands short fields to a Spartan offense that badly needs them. San José State has made 17/21 field goals, a real edge in a game that could stall in the red zone.
What the number says
The market opened San José State at -10 and hasn't budged, with the total at 52. Northern Illinois is 2-6 against the spread, but it covered last week as a 22-point underdog in a 24-31 loss at UNLV. That is a reminder the Huskies can score: DeAree Rogers has 26 catches for 300 yards over the last three games. The Spartans allow few big plays, ranking 11th in explosiveness allowed, so Rogers will have to grind out his yards.
Our model sets San José State at -11.8 with a 77% chance to win, a touch more confident than the market. It sees the total at 51.9, essentially the posted number, and a first-half line of -6.6.
- Sacks on Dickens before halftime
- Teu's carry share against Bates
- Rolovich's status in pregame warmups
