North Carolina Tar Heels vs UConn Huskies prediction: Belichick's homecoming hinges on taking away UConn's home-run offense

UConn's offense lives on chunk plays, and North Carolina's defense gives up almost everything except the long gain.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 7, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • North Carolina moves the ball steadily through Billy Edwards Jr.; UConn needs explosive plays against a defense that rarely allows them.
  • UConn's run game, ninth in rushing EPA, against a UNC front that ranks last in stuff rate but fifth in explosiveness allowed.
  • Our model makes it North Carolina by 7.5 with a 54.7 total, essentially the market's number.

Chunk plays or nothing

UConn's offense is built on the long gain. The Huskies rank 5th in explosiveness, the value an offense squeezes out of its successful plays, and 9th in rushing EPA (expected points added per play). Kalieb Osborne's quarterback-run spread averages 6.84 yards per play, 12th in the country.

North Carolina's defense is unusual in a way that matters here. It almost never wins at the line: its stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage, is 10.0%, dead last of 138. Its havoc rate ranks 131st. Opponents stay on schedule against the Tar Heels, whose success rate allowed ranks 112th. Third downs are a problem too, at 123rd nationally.

But UNC ranks 5th in explosiveness allowed. The Tar Heels give up the modest gain and make the tackle. That forces UConn to string together long drives, and it has the ground game to try: the Huskies rank 16th in line yards per carry, against a UNC front that ranks 91st. Cyncir Bowers averages 6.8 yards a carry, though he managed just 7 yards on four carries at Air Force. If UConn has to grind instead of strike, every drive becomes a chance for a penalty or a stall.

Edwards is in rhythm

Billy Edwards Jr. sprained his knee in the opener and missed two games. He looks fully himself now. Over his last three games he has thrown 7 touchdowns without an interception. Against Miami he completed 82.4% of his passes for 341 yards, and North Carolina scored 35 and still lost, a first for Belichick as a head coach at any level.

The Tar Heels have to throw, because they can't run: they rank 126th in rushing yards per game. Jordan Shipp leads the team with 587 receiving yards, and Jelani Thurman has 6 touchdown catches. UConn's pass defense ranks 116th in passing yards allowed.

The catch is protection. UNC allows 2.38 sacks per game, 106th nationally, and tackles Jordan Hall and Andrew Threatt were listed questionable before the Miami game with no update since. UConn's pass rush is middling at 92nd in sacks, but Joshua Mickens has 2 sacks in his last three games.

Two very different schedules

Both teams are 4-4, but the records weren't built the same way. North Carolina's FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of 10.7; UConn's sit at -6.4. The Huskies' recent wins came against Temple and Massachusetts, ranked 100th and 114th in SP+. UNC just took Miami, 5th in SP+, to the final possession.

There is one common opponent. Both teams lost to Syracuse by a single point, UNC 31-30 and UConn 42-41. FPI sees a wide gap, ranking UNC 38th and UConn 92nd.

The stakes lean toward the visitors. North Carolina needs two wins for bowl eligibility, and this trip marks the farthest into New England Belichick has traveled in his two years in Chapel Hill. UConn also owns the most recent meeting, a 27-14 win in the 2024 Fenway Bowl.

Hidden yards favor UNC

Discipline is the cleanest edge in the game. North Carolina gives up 32.4 penalty yards per game, 4th in the country. UConn gives up 77.5, 131st. For an offense that may need long drives against this defense, those flags are costly.

The kicking game adds to it. UConn has made 4 of 7 field goals, so stalled drives may not even produce points. UNC returns kicks at 29.7 yards per runback, 8th nationally, though its net punting ranks 121st and can hand some field position back.

Where the number lands

North Carolina opened as a 7-point favorite and hasn't moved across 30 books, with the total at 54.5. Our model sees the same game: North Carolina 31.1, UConn 23.6, with UConn winning 32.0% of the time. The side gap is half a point, so there's no strong lean either way.

The script that fits the matchup is Edwards moving the chains through the air while UConn hunts for big plays. If the Huskies find them, this stays tight; if UNC keeps everything in front, the penalties and missed kicks should decide it.
