Nevada Wolf Pack vs UCLA Bruins prediction: UCLA's Run Game Has a Clear Lane Through Nevada's Soft Front
The Bruins grind, Nevada can't stop runs at the line, and the Wolf Pack still doesn't know who plays quarterback against the nation's top-rated defense.
| Spread | UCLA -22.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 43.5 |
- UCLA should run the ball heavily against a Nevada front that rarely stops runs at the line, while its defense smothers an unsettled Wolf Pack offense.
- UCLA's offensive line against Nevada's run defense, which ranks 130th in stuff rate. Early push here dictates the margin.
- Our fair line is UCLA by 22.68, right on the market's 22.5. We see no meaningful edge on the full-game spread.
Where Nevada Gives Ground
UCLA is 7-0, ranked No. 7 and unbeaten against the spread, yet its offense has spent the last month grinding rather than gliding. Nevada arrives at the Rose Bowl with an unsettled quarterback room and one of the softest run defenses in the country. That collision decides whether a 22.5-point spread is too much or not enough.
The Bruins run for 233.0 yards per game, 9th in FBS. Their line yards per carry, a measure of the push the offensive line creates before a back reaches open field, sit at 3.5, also 9th. Nevada allows 3.21 line yards per carry, which ranks 122nd. Its stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 14.1%, good for only 130th.
UCLA's last outing showed the formula. After an early fumble put the Bruins in a hole against Michigan State, they rushed for 245 yards and scored 28 unanswered points. Anthony Woods carried that game with 112 yards on 14 carries.
Wayne Knight, the team's touchdown leader, left that game with an apparent rib or oblique injury. Chesney called it "nothing overly dangerous" and said Knight could have returned, but his Saturday status isn't confirmed. Woods averages 6.9 yards per carry, so the drop-off is small if Knight sits.
This is one game where a tested pattern fits. When the favorite covers, the favorite's rushing has cleared its line 33.9% of the time in our testing, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated.
Nevada's Quarterback Carousel
Carter Jones (arm) and backup AJ Bianco (ankle) both missed the San José State win, and Choate said it's too early to name a starter for UCLA. Jones, Luke Duncan and Bianco were all listed as able to play Saturday. Duncan started last week and threw two touchdown passes, and our projection has him starting again.
Whoever lines up faces the defense that ranks 1st in EPA per play allowed (expected points added per play). UCLA ranks 1st against both the run and the pass by that measure. Opponents convert just 25.6% of third downs, 3rd nationally.
Nevada's passing game was thin even before the injuries, at 177.3 yards per game (121st). Our projection gives the Pack 142.0 passing yards Saturday. Nevada's best hope is its backfield. Herschel Turner averages 6.8 yards per carry and ran for 192 against UTEP, but UCLA allows only 90.4 rushing yards per game. The Bruins' havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup, is 20.1%, 9th in the country.
UCLA's Offense Has Cooled
The case for Nevada starts here. Ty Dieffenbach took over for the injured Nico Iamaleava, and UCLA averaged 20.7 points over its last three games against Oregon, Wisconsin and Michigan State. The Bruins' explosiveness ranks 128th, so this offense moves the chains rather than hitting home runs. Dieffenbach also had an injury scare against Michigan State, with no update since.
Nevada's pass defense allows 153.0 yards per game, 6th nationally, but the schedule behind that number is soft. The average SP+ rating of Nevada's FBS opponents is -9.1, against 0.6 for UCLA's. Nevada's passing EPA allowed ranks a middling 67th, a truer read.
UCLA also gives away yards. It commits 79.9 penalty yards per game, 131st, which can stall drives in a game that needs four or five scores to cover.
Turnovers, Field Position and the Number
The hidden-yards battle tilts hard toward UCLA. The Bruins force 3.14 turnovers per game, 2nd in FBS, while Nevada gives the ball away 1.71 times per game, 120th. Nevada forces just 0.43 takeaways per game, 137th. UCLA's average drive starts at its own 34.6, 2nd nationally. One Nevada weapon: a kick return average of 32.3 yards, 5th.
The line opened at UCLA -23.5 and has drifted to -22.5, with the total at 44.5. Choate called a win a "watershed moment" and said the goal is to stay close into the fourth quarter. History is against it: Nevada is 1-23 on the road against AP Top 25 teams. Nevada has covered four of seven this season, with one push.
