Elon vs Stanford Cardinal prediction: Stanford's last-ranked defense gets a reprieve against a stalled Elon offense
The Cardinal have been outscored 115-10 over their last two games, and Elon was just shut out by Wofford, so one of those slides has to stop at Stanford Stadium.
- Stanford should control a homecoming game against an FCS offense in a slump, but a bottom-ranked defense makes any margin uncertain.
- Elon's offense, shut out 16-0 by Wofford, now faces a Stanford defense ranked 138th in EPA allowed per play.
- Our model doesn't price this game yet.
A defense with nowhere lower
Stanford enters its Reunion Homecoming having been outscored 115-10 over its last two games, losses at Wake Forest and Notre Dame. The defense is why the season has unravelled. It ranks 138th of 138 in EPA allowed per play (expected points added, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard). Opponents convert 52.6% of third downs, which ranks 137th. Once drives reach scoring range, the Cardinal concede 5.36 points per opportunity, dead last again.
The recent form is worse than the baseline. Against Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Notre Dame, Stanford allowed 0.493 EPA per play. Six defensive backs were unavailable at Wake Forest, and cornerback Brandon Nicholson has missed an extended stretch with a non-contact leg injury. Linebacker Matt Rose, the leading tackler among the listed defenders, was a late scratch before Wake Forest, and his status for Elon is unconfirmed.
No pass rush covers for the thin secondary. Stanford averages 0.67 sacks per game, 135th nationally. Its havoc rate (share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup) is 11.1%, which ranks 131st.
Elon's offense has gone cold
This is where the matchup turns. Elon's offense has stalled across its last three games against Maine, New Hampshire and Wofford. The Phoenix averaged -0.171 EPA per play in that stretch. Their success rate (share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) was 34.1%.
The low point came last week, a 16-0 loss to Wofford in the rain. Elon outgained Wofford and still couldn't score, giving the ball away five times. Nothing has surfaced on Elon's starting quarterback or injuries this week.
Elon's defense has done more of the work. Over those same three games it held opponents to -0.089 EPA per play and a 34.9% success rate. The rating gap remains wide: Elon's SRS sits at -33.7. Stanford's -9.0 ranks 100th in FBS. Elon arrives 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the CAA for the first meeting between the programs.
Warren's arm, no ground game
Stanford can't lean on the run to settle this. The Cardinal average 86.2 rushing yards per game, 136th nationally. Their 2.64 line yards per carry (rushing yardage credited to the offensive line) rank 126th. Micah Ford has 350 yards on 95 carries, and he has averaged 3.1 yards per carry over the last three games. Guard N. Prongos was listed as questionable in the Oct. 11 injury report, and no newer update has surfaced.
That puts the game on Davis Warren. His best day was the 34-27 home win over Georgia Tech, when he threw for 396 yards. He followed it with 136 yards at Wake Forest and 144 at Notre Dame. In South Bend, his 52-yard strike to Caden High set up Benjamin Blackburn's touchdown, Stanford's only score. Warren played until the closing minutes before Charlie Mirer replaced him, and no injury has been reported.
The offense does protect the ball. Its 0.83 turnovers per game rank 39th, and Elon is coming off a five-turnover game. That at least gives Stanford a chance to win the turnover battle.
Field position and the step down
Stanford's 2-4 record came against a brutal slate. Its six FBS opponents average an SP+ of 10.5, and that list includes Notre Dame, ranked 3rd. Elon is the first opponent from outside FBS on the schedule, and this is Stanford's last non-conference game.
The hidden yards have hurt. Stanford's average starting field position of 24.0 is last in FBS. Opponents start at 31.3, which ranks 122nd. Kicker L. Bironas was listed as questionable on Oct. 11, and Stanford has made 5/7 field goals. Short fields for Elon's offense would give a struggling unit its best chance to keep this close.
Key players
- Davis Warren (Stanford): Threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns against Georgia Tech, then managed 136 and 144 in the two blowouts since.
- Caden High (Stanford): Leads the receivers with 300 yards and three touchdowns in five games, including the 52-yard catch at Notre Dame.
- Micah Ford (Stanford): Has 350 yards on 95 carries but has averaged 3.1 yards per carry over the last three games.
- Matt Rose (Stanford): Has 38 tackles in four games, and his availability after missing Wake Forest is unconfirmed.
Numbers that matter
| Stanford EPA allowed per play | 138th | The worst defense in FBS by expected points, and the last three games were worse still. |
|---|---|---|
| Elon offensive EPA, last 3 | -0.171 | Elon's offense has been losing value on a typical snap, capped by a shutout loss to Wofford. |
| Stanford rushing yards per game | 86.2 | Ranks 136th, so Stanford's offense runs through Warren's arm. |
| Stanford points per opportunity allowed | 5.36 | Dead last in FBS, so every Elon trip into scoring range is costly. |
| Stanford average starting field position | 24.0 | Last in FBS, which leaves Stanford's offense with long fields. |
