Missouri State Bears vs Florida International Panthers prediction: Isaiah Myers tests an FIU pass defense that has lost its grip

FIU's season numbers say it can contain Missouri State's big-play receiver, but its last three games say otherwise, and the answer probably decides this homecoming game.

Quick take
  • FIU leans on Devonte Lyons against a soft Missouri State front while the Bears look to Henry Belin IV's arm to keep pace.
  • Isaiah Myers, with 873 receiving yards in seven games, against an FIU defense allowing 53.3% success rate over its last three.
  • Our model makes FIU about a 6-point favorite, slightly more than the 4.5-point market line, with the total near 49.5.

Myers and a slipping secondary

Two 3-5 Conference USA teams start their final four-game stretch in Miami, and the more dangerous player wears Missouri State maroon. Isaiah Myers has 873 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in seven games. Two games before Sam Houston, at Delaware, he caught 11 passes for 242 yards.

Henry Belin IV is the reason the ball finds him. Belin averages 8.5 yards per attempt this season and 8.9 over his last three starts, and he threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-3 win over Sam Houston.

FIU's season pass defense looks built to handle that. The Panthers rank 26th in passing yards allowed and 44th in passing EPA allowed. EPA is expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard. Over the last three games, though, FIU allowed 0.306 EPA per play. Opponents stayed on schedule on 53.3% of snaps in that stretch, which is the success rate.

Liberty did much of that damage in a 49-10 rout. Middle Tennessee, ranked 126th in SP+, still scored 26 points in Miami the week before. The caveat runs the other way too: Belin's numbers came against soft opposition, and Missouri State's last four opponents rank between 116th and 130th in SP+. If the season-long FIU defense shows up, that efficiency gets tested. If the recent version shows up, Myers has room.

Lyons and the soft middle

FIU doesn't score much on its own. The Panthers rank 130th in points per game and 124th in points per scoring opportunity, so drives that cross midfield too often stall. J.J. Kohl has thrown nine interceptions and completes 59.6% of his passes.

The opening is on the ground. Missouri State ranks 121st in line yards allowed per carry, which measures how much push the defensive front gives up. It ranks 112th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line. Devonte Lyons is averaging 5.5 yards per carry over his last three games, including 115 yards against Middle Tennessee. Our projection has FIU rushing for 150 yards.

That lines up with one of our tested patterns. When the favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. A heavy dose of Lyons is the likeliest route to an FIU cover.

Third down adds to the case. FIU converts 44.2% of the time, 36th nationally. Missouri State allows conversions at 43.4%, which ranks 117th.

Long fields and shaky legs

Neither team wins the field-position battle. Missouri State's opponents start drives at the 32.3 on average, which ranks 136th. FIU is barely better at 135th.

FIU's gross punting average of 37.9 yards ranks 137th of 138. Missouri State has made 9 of 13 field goals. FIU has hit 13 of 19. In a game priced inside a touchdown, a missed kick or a short punt matters.

FIU does one thing well here. It allows just 1.4 yards per punt return, seventh in the country.

Rest, homecoming and the number

Missouri State arrives with 11 days of rest after the Sam Houston win, while FIU has seven after the trip to Liberty. This is the Bears' first trip to Pitbull Stadium, and they won last year's meeting 28-21.

It's also FIU's homecoming, and Willie Simmons spent the week challenging the fan base: "If I have to beg, plead, barter and convince you to show up for homecoming, are we really serious about football?"

The market opened FIU -4.5 and hasn't moved, with the total at 49.5. Our model rates the gap between these teams a bit wider. FIU is 100th in SP+, and Missouri State is 128th. The model's fair line is FIU -6, with a projected score of 27.9 to 21.9 and a 65% home win probability. Its fair total of 49.86 sits right on the market. For the first half, it makes FIU a 3.37-point favorite.
