Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats prediction: Northwestern's Night Hinges on Aidan Chiles Against Iowa's Run Wall

The Wildcats' explosive offense runs through a quarterback listed questionable, and Iowa owns the best run defense in the country by one key measure.

Quick take
  • A tight, low-scoring Big Ten fight in which Iowa's field-position edge keeps it close unless Chiles plays and gets loose.
  • Northwestern's shaky pass protection against an Iowa pass rush that ranks 10th nationally in sacks per game.
  • Our number is a little more favorable to Northwestern than the market: the market has Iowa by 2.5 with a total of 43.0, while we have Northwestern by 1.28 and a total of 43.0, but we have no full-game edge to recommend.

Everything Runs Through Chiles

Northwestern built one of the country's most efficient offenses around one player, and nobody outside the building knows whether he plays Saturday. Aidan Chiles was listed questionable on Wednesday's Big Ten availability report, with no public explanation. He dealt with a dislocated finger earlier this season and took a hard hit at Oregon. If he can't go, Nicco Marchiol would be under center.

The gap between those two outcomes is enormous. Chiles has 13 touchdown passes and averages 9.4 yards per attempt. He has thrown just 1 interception and has run for 10 more scores. Northwestern ranks 7th nationally in EPA per play (expected points added per play), and its passing game ranks 14th by the same measure. Even in the loss at Oregon, he piled up 374 total yards.

He will need every bit of that. Iowa ranks 1st in the country in rushing EPA allowed. The Hawkeyes give up 79.0 rushing yards per game, 4th nationally. Opponents keep themselves on schedule on just 33.0% of snaps, a success rate allowed that ranks 6th. A quarterback-run spread can manufacture numbers against a front like that, but only with Chiles running it.

Protection Is the Soft Spot

The cleaner path to an Iowa win runs through Northwestern's pass protection. The Wildcats allow 2.25 sacks per game, 97th nationally. Iowa's defense averages 3.0 sacks per game, 10th. Cam Buffington has been the hottest rusher, with 3.0 sacks across his last 3 games. A quarterback nursing an injury behind a line that leaks pressure is the matchup Iowa's staff will build around.

Iowa has its own line question. Center Cael Winter is likely out, and Michael Myslinski is expected to start. The Hawkeyes have been excellent at keeping Hank Brown clean, allowing 0.88 sacks per game, 10th nationally. Northwestern's rush is unlikely to exploit the change: it averages 1.62 sacks per game, which ranks 100th.

Which Hank Brown Shows Up

Brown arrives on a high. He went 20-of-24 in last week's 30-0 shutout of Wisconsin and was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The game before that told a different story: 11-of-21 with 2 interceptions in a 13-10 loss at Minnesota, where Iowa scored just 10.

Iowa's offense is built to grind, not strike. It ranks 91st in explosiveness, a measure of how much value its successful plays produce. Over the last three games, though, the Hawkeyes have stayed on schedule on 51.1% of plays. That fits against this Northwestern defense, which allows a 41.9% success rate, 85th nationally. Kamari Moulton has shown both ends of the range, running for 208 yards at Washington and 22 at Minnesota.

Field Position Tilts to Iowa

In a game priced this tight, hidden yards could decide it. Iowa leads the country in kick return average at 37.2 yards. Its opponents start drives at their own 24.6 on average, 2nd nationally. Northwestern ranks 125th in net punting and 106th in its own average starting position, so the Wildcats are likely to face longer fields all night.

Northwestern's counter is ball security. The Wildcats commit just 0.38 turnovers per game, 2nd in the country. Iowa has a kicking wobble of its own: its 92.0% extra-point rate ranks 129th, a small leak that matters when a game is decided by a point or two.

Where the Number Lands

Northwestern opened as a 2.5-point favorite, but the line has moved from Northwestern -2.5 to Iowa -2.5, with 27 books quoting it and the total at 43.0. The schedules behind the matching 6-2 records differ, though. Iowa's FBS opponents average an SP+ of 5.1, against 2.6 for Northwestern's. The Wildcats' three straight wins before Oregon came against Michigan State, Rutgers and Ball State, all ranked 89th or worse by SP+. Iowa has won every meeting in the series since 2021, including a 40-14 rout in 2024.

Our model sits close to the market but leans slightly toward Northwestern, at Northwestern by 1.28 with a total of 43.0, which matches the market total. The Chiles report is the variable that number can't fully capture.
