Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs South Alabama Jaguars prediction: Louisiana Tech's havoc defense dares South Alabama to run
The Jaguars live on the ground, and Louisiana Tech's front ranks among the nation's best at blowing up plays before they start.
| Spread | Louisiana Tech -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 58.5 |
- Louisiana Tech's front stalls South Alabama's run game, and Blake Baker picks apart a Jaguars defense that struggles to get off the field.
- South Alabama's rushing attack against a Bulldogs defense that ranks 3rd in havoc and 5th in line yards allowed.
- Our number matches the market: Louisiana Tech by 5.5 with a 58.5 total, so we see no edge on the full-game side.
Running into a wall
The Sun Belt West may be settled in Mobile on Saturday. Louisiana Tech is 3-0 in league play and hasn't allowed a point in eight quarters. South Alabama is unbeaten at home and runs the ball as well as almost anyone, so the clash is easy to see.
The Jaguars average 214.3 rushing yards per game, 16th in FBS. Keenan Phillips and PJ Martin split the work, and both have found the end zone regularly.
Louisiana Tech's defense was built for this assignment. The Bulldogs rank 3rd in havoc rate (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup) at 23.0%. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 25.5%. They allow 2.25 line yards per carry, 5th nationally, which means backs rarely get free yardage before contact.
Alonzo Jackson Jr. is the man South Alabama has to account for, with 12.5 tackles for loss this season. The Jaguars protect well, ranking 13th in sacks allowed per game, so the real fight happens on first and second down. If South Alabama keeps facing long second downs, it is playing someone else's game.
Hollins under the microscope
Major Applewhite said he will not make a quarterback change, so Jared Hollins starts. Bishop Davenport has been available the last couple of weeks but has not won the job back.
That makes this a test of Hollins' accuracy, and the trend is poor. He has completed 54.4% of his passes this season. At Marshall he went 12 of 33, and South Alabama lost 13-20 on a Tuesday night.
Louisiana Tech ranks 13th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play), so Hollins is not getting relief through the air. The opening is the deep ball. The Bulldogs rank 110th in explosiveness allowed, and Anthony Eager has turned just 13 catches into 348 yards. One or two shots to Eager are South Alabama's best route to keeping pace.
Baker against a soft back end
Blake Baker has been the steadiest player in this game. He has completed 72.2% of his passes with 10 touchdowns against 1 interception, and he has not thrown a pick in his last three games.
He draws a defense that cannot get off the field. South Alabama allows a 51.2% success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule), 137th of 138. The Jaguars also rank 110th in passing EPA allowed.
Eli Finley caught 10 passes for 128 yards against Old Dominion, and Cumbie praised Baker's trust in throwing into tight windows. Jalen Mickens leads the receivers in yards. The weak spot for Louisiana Tech is its own run game, which ranks 122nd in line yards per carry, and running back Dylone Brooks is listed as doubtful. Expect the Bulldogs to lean on Baker's arm.
Kicks, punts and schedule
Louisiana Tech has a real flaw: its kicking. The Bulldogs have made 5 of 13 field goals, 135th nationally. In a game this close to the number, a missed kick can swing the result against the spread.
The Bulldogs make up for it with field position. Their average starting spot ranks 3rd in FBS, helped by a punt return unit that ranks 11th. South Alabama ranks 137th in gross punting, so Louisiana Tech should keep getting short fields.
The shutout streak carries a caveat. It came against UL Monroe and Old Dominion, who rank 134th and 125th in SP+. South Alabama has had 11 days to prepare after its Tuesday game, while Louisiana Tech has had 7.
What our numbers say
Louisiana Tech opened as a 5.5-point favorite and the line hasn't moved. Our model lands on the same spread and the same 58.5 total, projecting roughly 32.0 to 26.5. It gives South Alabama a 37% chance to win at home.
If Louisiana Tech covers, the likely script runs through its front winning early downs and Baker staying efficient, not through South Alabama's backs.
