Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas State Wildcats prediction: Kansas needs big plays against a K-State defense that keeps surrendering them
Kansas State wins on efficiency and third down, so Kansas's path to ending the rivalry streak runs through the explosive plays the Wildcats keep giving up.
| Spread | Kansas State -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 55.5 |
- K-State aims to grind out long, mistake-free drives at home; Kansas must hit explosive plays against a defense ranked 134th in explosiveness allowed.
- K-State's third-down offense, converting 61.6%, against a Kansas defense that allows 30.4% and ranks fifth in stuff rate.
- Our model doesn't price this game yet.
Where the Wildcats bleed
Kansas State has beaten Kansas every year from 2021 through 2025. But this version of the Wildcats arrives on a two-game skid, and both teams sit 0-2 in Big 12 play. One of them leaves Manhattan still winless in the league.
The weakness Kansas will target is plain. K-State ranks 134th of 138 in explosiveness allowed, which measures how much damage opponents do on their successful plays. The Wildcats often win the down, then lose the big one. Over their last three games against Tulane, Cincinnati and Houston, they allowed 0.313 EPA per play (expected points added per play) and 28.7 points a game. Houston's Conner Weigman and Patrick Overmyer hooked up for four touchdowns in the last outing.
Kansas has the offense to cash in. The Jayhawks rank 20th in explosiveness and 19th in rushing EPA, and K-State's run defense ranks 95th in rushing EPA allowed. Kansas's line produces 3.58 line yards per carry, a measure of push up front, and that ranks 10th.
The catch is the backfield. Yasin Willis, Justin Thurman and Kory Amachree were all injured before the Utah game, and there has been no update since. Dylan Edwards carried 9 times for 22 yards in Salt Lake City. If the backs stay thin, more of the ground game falls to quarterback Isaiah Marshall.
Third down is K-State's lifeline
Kansas State does not hit many big plays. Its offense ranks 99th in explosiveness. It wins by staying on schedule, and nothing shows that better than a 61.6% third-down conversion rate, which ranks 2nd nationally.
Kansas's defense is built to break exactly that kind of offense. The Jayhawks allow 30.4% on third down, 19th in the country. They rank 5th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, at 27.7%. Leroy Harris III leads a front that lives in the backfield.
K-State's protection gives Avery Johnson a chance. The Wildcats allow 0.4 sacks per game, which ranks 3rd. They also finish drives, scoring 4.87 points per scoring opportunity, good for 11th. Johnson has cooled lately, though. He went 16 of 30 against Houston. If Kansas forces third-and-long, a K-State offense without a big-play gear can stall.
Hidden yards lean to Manhattan
Kansas loses field position before its defense takes the field. The Jayhawks allow 41.6 yards per kickoff return, last among 137 teams. Their offense starts drives with the 113th-best average field position.
K-State is cleaner around the edges. The Wildcats are 6/6 on field goals and rank among the least-penalized teams in the country. Kansas has given the ball away 1.6 times per game. The one break for the Jayhawks is that K-State rarely takes the ball away, ranking 127th in takeaways per game. A mistake-prone offense draws an opponent that seldom punishes mistakes.
Reading the 9.5
Kansas State opened as a 9.5-point favourite, and the line has not moved. No total is posted yet.
The records hide how different the two schedules have been. Kansas's FBS opponents average an SP+ rating of 6.4, against 0.4 for K-State. The Jayhawks lost to Missouri and Utah, two top-15 SP+ teams. K-State's two losses came as the favourite, at Cincinnati and at home to Houston. SP+ still prefers the Wildcats, 31st to Kansas's 50th.
Kansas has not covered as an underdog this season. Its chance to change that depends on the matchup in the first section. If K-State's third-down machine keeps the ball and Kansas's backfield stays banged up, the number holds. If the Jayhawks find the explosive plays K-State keeps surrendering, it does not.
Also watch the late injury reports. Kansas receiver Keaton Kubecka left the Utah game early, and his status is unknown. No injury report for this game has been released yet.
