Florida State Seminoles vs Boston College Eagles prediction: Stockstill's Florida State debut rests on Ashton Daniels avoiding mistakes
A fired coach, a gutted backfield and an interception habit meet a Boston College defense that takes the ball away, with the home team catching a touchdown.
| Spread | Florida State -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 52.5 |
- Florida State's explosive offense and pass rush should win, but Daniels' turnovers give Boston College a path to keep it within a score.
- Florida State's pass rush, 15th in sacks, against a Boston College line ranked 121st in sacks allowed and missing Michael Crounse.
- Our model makes Boston College a 6.7-point underdog with a 34% win chance, essentially the market's number.
An interim coach, a thin roster
Florida State fired Mike Norvell on Sunday, a day after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson. He finished 41-39. Rick Stockstill, a former Seminoles quarterback who has been director of offensive scouting since 2024, takes over as interim coach, with Tim Harris Jr. calling the offense.
He inherits a depleted roster. Wide receiver Duce Robinson tore his ACL against Clemson. Running backs Ousmane Kromah and Sam Singleton Jr. are out for the season. Starter Tre Wisner is questionable, and freshman Amari Thomas is next up. Florida State's initial availability report lists 12 players out.
The Seminoles are 3-5 on a three-game slide, and a third straight year without a bowl is in play. Their offense still ranks 6th in explosiveness, which measures how much each successful play gains. With the backfield gone, more of that falls on Ashton Daniels, who is averaging 9.2 yards per attempt and has 12 rushing touchdowns.
The interception problem
Daniels' big plays come with a cost. He has 11 interceptions, five of them in the last three games and three against Clemson. Florida State gives the ball away 1.75 times per game, 126th of 138.
Boston College is the wrong opponent for that habit. The Eagles take the ball away 1.75 times per game, 14th nationally, and Anthony Palano has two interceptions to go with 69 tackles. Boston College's offense has trouble driving the field on its own, so short fields from turnovers are its most realistic route to points. If Daniels finishes the day without a giveaway, the Seminoles' talent edge should show.
Pressure on McKenzie's pocket
Florida State's defense has a clear strength. The Seminoles average 2.88 sacks per game, 15th in FBS, and Rylan Kennedy has 6.0 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. Boston College allows 2.88 sacks per game, 121st, and its havoc allowed rate of 18.2% ranks 125th. Havoc is the share of plays that end in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup. Offensive lineman Michael Crounse is out after being rolled up last week.
Mason McKenzie can escape. He has 638 rushing yards and ran for 170 at Georgia Tech. Florida State has struggled against the run, ranking 112th in rushing yards allowed, and that is where Boston College has room. Bo MacCormack III ran for 155 yards and three scores at Georgia Tech, with Evan Dickens out for the season.
The Eagles' floor is low, though. They rank 124th in EPA per play, or expected points added per play, and they lost 47-2 at Duke last week.
Hidden yards tilt south
Special teams could decide a close game. Boston College ranks last of 137 in net punting at 33.6 yards. Its punt return average of 1.6 yards ranks 136th, and its 83.3% extra-point rate ranks 136th. Florida State is 7-for-7 on field goals.
The Seminoles have one weak spot here: they allow 27.6 yards per kick return, 130th nationally. If Florida State scores often, that gives Boston College a way to win back field position.
Reading the recent form
Florida State's defense has fallen apart lately, allowing 41.0 points per game over the last three. That stretch came against Louisville, Miami and Clemson, and Florida State's opponents carry an average SP+ of 9.8, compared with 5.4 for Boston College's.
The market lists Florida State as a 6.5-point favorite after opening at 7, with the total at 52. Both teams have struggled against expectations at times. Florida State lost by 12 to Clemson as a 6.5-point favorite. Boston College is 5-3 against the spread this season but did not cover at Duke.
